There are many ways to help keep the biodiversity at a constant level.

Deforestation is a major problem for the vegetation growing around the amazon river. Machinery and burning may cause chemicals or nitrates to pollute the river, causing damage to the fish and other animals that live in the river (as well as plants too).
Nutrients may not be as plentiful in the river if deforestation continues and equilibrium will be disrupted in the ecosystems.

The Amazon river is doing exactly what it wants to . The few people that are stupid enough to live there are the natives . Even the hunt for gold doesn't impact it as the river and the jungle always winds. The hunt for oil is too expensive ,if gasoline went to $5 per gallon they might try but I doubt it. I lived in the head waters of the Amazon for 12 years.
