I suggest going to "sally beauty" or a similiar supply store and picking up a shade from the ION brand line..I would also use the ION developer..

You will want to stick with a low lift shade, so it does not damage your hair..I would not go less than a 5 ( they will range from 1 to 9 ) ..

if you ask the sales girls to show you the ION colors , in the shades you are considering, level 5 and over..they will know what I am talking about..do not let them advise you otherwise, remember they are just trying to boost theor commission bonus..
as for the developer, go with the ION in the purple bottle..you only need at the most a level 20 developer..anything more will certainly fry anyones "virgin" hair..and they will try to talk you into higher levels that are a bit more pricey and are basicly the equivelent of Clorox bleach in a pretty bottle..

make sure you wash your hair 24 hours before you color, do not wash it right before and please do not use any hair products after the wash and before the color..
I also recommend a decent shampoo, not a expensive "designer'' name shampoo..but something of quality..
So far, the best we have found for colored hair is an olive oil based shampoo and conditioner.. you can find it at some drug stores, some walk in salons, and at the beauty supply stores ( in many different brands ) ..its all ugly green stuff but has been proven over time to make even over processed hair return to life..I personally use and love the "REGIS companies DESIGN LINE OLIVE OILE SHAMPOO and CONDITIONER"..both come in liter bottles ( very large and last a long time because you only need a pump or 2 and worked miracles on my hair..I process it frequently and it is very long, down to my waist )

if you need any more help or just have any questions, feel free to e mail me through yahoo..

If you want to just buy and use a "box" brand that you can pick up at any retail store, I would suggest " CLAIROLS NICE and EASY" product line..it is the most gentle and true to the color you are trying to acheive of the non-professional boxed dye kits..I personally dont use them on myself, but have used them many times on friends hair..
The different between the professional color and the retail kits are the metals and the other added ingredients ( box kits contain many metals and pro colors do not ) and you do not have to have a cosmetology liscence to purchase the better stuff at the beauty supply stores, so no worries there..

Natural Instincts by Clairol washes out in 28 shampoos or something, that's a good brand or if you want to go permanent, L'Oreal Preference or Excellence are also good ones.

I'm a guy, and not gay. But I work with a lot of girls who dye their hair... a lot. To me, the best color is a brownish-red. This really depends on your skin color.

loreal preference or loreal natural match both work well. my mom has always dyed her hair at home with loreal and it's turned out great.
