My little kitty was run over by a car last Saturday, thankfully he survived but suffered a badly broken pelvis. He has been in the vet's care all week, first with a local vet and then on Wednesday he was transferred to a specialist who performed surgery on one side of his pelvis on Thursday. This went well but the vet said it was best to keep him in over the weekend to see how the other side is doing. When I visited my little cat this morning the vet said, all being well, I should be able to bring him home on Monday. I am so happy! I have spoken in length with the vet about the practical care he should receive when at home. My cat is only 2 and a real live wire. He will have to be kept in a cage at home for at least the next few weeks and I know that this will be really traumatic for him, I am wondering if anyone has done this before and has any advice on his emotional welfare? Many thanks!

unfortunately this is the only way if you want the other side to heal. Cats pelvis' fuse very well but only if minimal use is adhered to. At my practice we have had four of these cases within 2weeks and all are now subject to cage rest its a shame i know but as long as you ensure the cat has a cage big enough for a tray and bowls and then space to move around slightly its the best for the cat.
try placing the cat in a quieter environment for most the time so as the cat is not teased and wants to come out, and before you know it the cat will be allowed out and although a slight limp may stay with for the rest of its life you will be lucky your lil kitty is free again. hope all goes well you will be doing the best for the cat i promise and your kitty will know this!

I'm so glad your cat is going to be OK. I've seen hundreds of cats with broken pelvises - most owners can't afford the surgery, or it isn't indicated, and cage rest is the only answer. Many don't survive it, so it's so nice to hear of another that has made it!

Of course, I've never had to keep my own cat confined to a cage, so I can't really comment on how to deal with that. I know I'd hate to have to do it myself - but I think I'd cope by telling myself every second that it's for the best, and the only way for kitty to heal. Remember after this kind of surgery, your cat will probably not feel like much else except lying around!

Good luck and congratulations,

Chalice

My cat was also hit by a car and broke his pelvis.
The main thing that your cat shouldnt be doing is jumping.
My vet suggested I put my cat in a very large box that he couldnt jump out of.
I used a box from a washing machine.
This is large enough to put in a litter tray and some bedding.
My cat was in there for approx 2 weeks and after that was ok to walk around th house but could stll not go outside for a few weeks.
You dont need to close the box lid.
Hope your cat is ok and hope this helps

These recommendations sound very reasonable for this situation. It will be very difficult for you and kitty. You have to be strong. The surgeon I work for tells his clients who must keep their pet strictly confined to tape a copy of your hospital invoice on top of your kitty's kennel. This will remind you of how much money you spent every time you are tempted to let your kitty out for some "well-meaning" exercise. This will make you think twice before letting him out and risking additional injury or set-back.

I would recommend you hold your kitty at least a few times a day. Just hold him and rub him and talk to him. This way he will know he is not forgotten. Just please do not let him walk around. He will meow ALOT and he will be unhappy, but he will be better off for it.
Good luck and I hope the next few weeks fly by for you

I adopted a kitten with ringworm, so I had to keep him confined in a kennel for this first 2 months I had him to reduce the risk of it spreading to other cats (and us). It was pretty frustrating, but we all got through it.

Oh poor kittie, I don't have any practical advice but I hope he's ok. I have a very old lady cat snoring away next to me as I type but I'm sure she sends her best wishes too.

i actually have done rescue work, and we had a cat that was hit by a car or something,. but it had to be locked in a small cage so it wouldn't really be able to walk on its leg... he lived like that for a few months actually. he was let out a little, mostly just for attention but still wasn't allowed to walk around on it... you might want to work on keeping him inside for the future though...

Keep the cat company. Make sure you love on him a lot and make sure you don't feel guilty about the cage - he'll pick up on that. Make sure he has his toys in the cage with him.

Give him lots of attention. He needs to know that you still love him.
