Raw data is flying by instruments without the use of a flight director. The flight director will show either bars( bank and pitch steering) or a "V" to aide in heading and altitude control. During an instrument approach to an airport, with out the flight director, you must referance the runway and glide slope with data from another instrument with no imput to the steering bars. Thats called a raw data approach.

Because there was a very famous incident involving pilots working for Northwest Airlines who were found to be VERY drunk. Not just a little tipsy, but beyond inebriated. While the jokes are still out there, this did happen 9-10 years ago, and many procedures have been changed. Alcohol consumption within 12 hours of a flight is grounds for dismissal from any airline now.

Raw data is the term used to indicate direct navigation information displayed on the pilots flight instruments.
I suspect the cited quote was from the approach brief, and the briefer wanted the other pilot to know he was going to be tuned up to the same ILS or VOR frequency for display on his HSI (horizontal situation indicator) and/or CDI (course deviation indicator). This is often done in truly foul weather for a good backup on the course/glideslope information, instead of the fair weather option of having the pilot flying using the ILS and the other pilot staying up on the GPS navigation system for general area awareness.
The other use for the phrase is using the information from the navigation sensors uninterpreted by a flight director.

Raw data is information from flight instruments that is not corrected by any electronic means. All modern airliners are computer controlled and raw data is corrected to actual data, whereas on the old puddlejumpers like I fly, raw data is sufficient to get from point A to point B.
If the electronic data isn't agreeing with what you see on analog instruments, there is cause for concern.

It is the data collected by the Black box(eventhough it is red). the black box have all the data information like what altitude was the plane at certain time. it also records the cockpit conversation done by the pilots. What i recently heard was, now on Secret Agencies are going to choose some random aircraft and hear what is going on in cockpit..to avoid possible 9/11. Which is really good and effective way, i would imagine. But it may take little long since they need to put more gadget in planes to transmit live conv.

When we use the term "raw data" we are referring to flying the airplane without the aid of any flight director or autopilot. It is just basic instrument flying.
