We're shopping for a wide screen tv with surround sound for our living room. The guy from firedog came out to do a home installation consultation and said that if we buy a plasma screen we have to recharge it every 5 years or so. When we asked the man at Circuit City about this, he said that was crazy, and that there's no way to recharge a plasma screen tv. So which is it -- do plasma screens need to be recharged or is this some kind of weird urban legend? Would prefer to be answered by people actually working in the consumer electronics field.

Yes, charging plasma is an urban myth. These days, plasma last as long as LCD, about 60,000 hours until they go to half brightness. That's about 20 years of watching TV 8 hours a day.

TV Guy is right. There is now no essential difference in life expectancy between LCD and plasma.

Plasmas do not leak gas and they can't be recharged. However the older ones did wear out fast. If you mistreated them they were useless after about three years.

They say the new Plasmas are much better. I say don't bother. The new LCDs are better and cheaper and work very well.
