I've been driving the 2007 V6 SEL Fusion for about 2 weeks now.
3 negatives in comparison with the Camry:
1. Gas milage sucks. Take those EPA figures and throw them out the window. I drive about 50% expressway and 50% normal city and my milage is about 18 mpg. EPA said 20 in city and 28 highway.
2. Camry V6 is bigger, more powerful and has better torque and better gas milage.. The two cars weigh roughly the same. You do the math. Toyota just knows how to build great engines that outperform Fords in fuel economy.
3. Wide turning radius. About 6 feet wider than the Camry
On the positives:
1. Fusion looks awesome.
2. Very roomy. Lots of leg room front and back, even with the front seats pushed all the way back.
3. Bigger trunk
4. Much more fun to drive. Good road feel.
5. The fit and finish seem to be excellent. In the two weeks I've owned, it, I have yet to find any kind of a flaw, either mechanically, the exterior, or in overall quality. You know how some cars, the tolerances between pieces don't seem right? None of that on the Fusion. Everything looks and fits just right.
Considering it is assembled in Hermosillo, Mexico, they did an awesome job. My hat off to the Mexican assembly line workers. All I can say is, "Gracias. Gran trabajo."
Jay (below me here) is dead on, except the Fusion has more interior space.

I'm currently leasing a 2011 Fusion and my cousin owns a 2010 Civic coupe. The Fusion is the same car maybe with different wheels, and the Civic has been modestly redesigned. The Fusion can get up to 36 MPG on the highway, but typically gets between 23 and 26 MPG. The seats are comfortable on long drives, the four-cylinder engine has plenty of pep, and the six-speed transmission downshifts when I expect it to - not ten seconds after I press the throttle to the floor as in some "fuel-economy optimized" transmissions. The air conditioning works, but when it's 100 degrees out it gets a little weak. All I have done is oil changes and tire rotations on it. It's definitely one of the best cars I've ever driven, but it's not exactly inspiring to drive. That's OK, though, that's what I have a sportscar for. Minor quibbles: I don't like where the iPod connections are, or how the SYNC menu system works - but you're supposed to be able to do everything via voice control. Which still doesn't understand me despite a year of trying to train it. (I speak with a little bit of a British accent which I think confuses it.) I've asked my cousin about her Civic and she's not a gearhead girl... she just says it's a good car and she loves it. She gets about 28-32 MPG if she doesn't lead-foot it, and it's easy to drive. That is exactly what the Civic was designed for - to be great inexpensive basic transportation - so it's fulfilling its purpose. The Fusion is bigger but the Civic gets better mileage. If you like the Fusion, test-drive the Accord; they're a closer match for a head-to-head comparison.

I just purchased a Fusion yesterday, after test driving almost every model available in the Fusion, as well as a friend's new Camry and test drive in an Accord. I found that after reviewing everything, the Fusion was the best choice. I could have afforded a new Camry at close to $30000 but got a loaded Fusion SE V6 for $23100. I feel a researched everything possible, including Consumer Reports, friend's opinions and multiple test drives and got the best car possible.
Hope this helps!
I don't know much about the new Maxima, it's the only one I didn't look into!

To answer this question as well as the ones posed in the answers, in many ways, yes, the Fusion is better. It comes with the option for either a 2.3L I-4 with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic transmission, or a 3.0L V-6 with a 6-speed transmission. Fusion alsw has all-wheel drive available, and will be coming out witha Hybrid version sometime in 2008.
Car & Driver and Road & Track put on a little test, first in Washington DC, then in Hollywood, and got several hunder people to test drive the Fusion, the Camry, and the Accord. They had a questionaire that they filled out before and after, and, as expected, the befores showed the pre-concieved notion that the foreign cars were better. However, much to the suprise of many, the afters listed the Fusion as the clear winner. Check out the website Ford put together after the event, http://www.fusionchallenge.com.
Also, if you check our the Office of Defects Investigation, you will find the following stats:
Ford Fusion complaints:
2006, 16 complaints, 2 injuries, 0 deaths.
2007, 2 complaints, 0 injuries, 0 deaths.
Honda Accord complaints:
2006, 48 complaints, 1 injury, 0 deaths.
2007, 9 complaints, 1 injury, 0 deaths.
Toyota Camry complaints:
2006, 51 complaints, 16 injuries, 0 deaths.
2007, 126 complaints, 12 injuries, 51 deaths.
Keep in mind the Camry was "totally redesigned" for 2007, and the Fusion was a brand new car for 2006. You be the judge.

I drove a 2007 Fusion for a week 5Spd. it was a good car i would definitely trade up from my focus. I used to work with Toyota. there good cars too but the new Camry cost way more than a Fusion. Power wise the i feel the same unless your getting a V6.

I've driven, and like all three of those, but the Fusion just seems to "feel" better on the road. It's handling and driveablility and comfort is just superb, in my opinion.

well i recently drove my aunts new fusion and personally i did not like it because it was too slow because it was a 4 cylinder engine. The Camry and Accord are better because they have more power and has longer durabilty than the Fusion.

you just said it was a 4 cylinder, what do you expect? if you had a v6 v8, then it would smoke the camary and accord. i have no idea what it would compare to the maxima.
