I recently received a phone call from someone who said that they were from the IRS. His voice had a really heavy accent and he said that the IRS was going to give me $12,500 just because I am a tax paying citizen. Has anyone else come across this same scenario?

This is a scam, hopefully you did not give them your bank account number or Social Security number to them

The IRS sees a variety of different scams on different issues. One recent example involves a bogus e-mail claiming to be from the IRS. In this “phishing” scheme, the scam artist’s e-mail claims to be from the IRS, tells recipients that they are due a federal tax refund, and directs them to a Web site that appears to be a genuine IRS site. The bogus sites contain forms or interactive Web pages similar to IRS forms or Web pages but which have been modified to request detailed personal and financial information from the e-mail recipients.

In general, all taxpayers should keep in mind the IRS never asks people for the PIN numbers, passwords or similar secret access information for their credit card, bank or other financial accounts. If in doubt about someone claiming to be from the IRS or working on behalf of the IRS, call the agency’s toll-free help line at 800-829-1040.

MarineMom hit it right on the head. The IRS does not give out free money. They would more than likely have asked you for your bank information so that they could deposit the $12,500 into your bank account, but the only way money would have been moving would have been out of your account and into theirs.

Total fraud and scam!!! NO-the IRS does not give away money and I can't imagine anyone from there calling you and telling you that either! They were probably going to ask for your bank account number so that they could deposit the $12,500 into your account...LOL! I hope you did not give them any personal information--sounds like you were sceptical and did not. :)

That's the way I understand it. We are NOT to claim it. Also, it's not suppposed to be an "advance" on next years tax bill. I hope it's still true next year at tax time!

sounds like a scam to me. Maybe the call was from one of your friends pulling a joke on you.
