It's completely normal for a vulva to be swollen during a heat.
I just wanted to respond to Mike L.
Mike - if people only responded to the question and didn't address the issue, there would be a wholllle lot of problems in this world.
What if someone's question was 'My dog is very ill and I think she needs to die. How hard do I need to hit her on the head?' Would you tell them how hard, or would you suggest taking her to the vet? I'm exaggerating the issue, but I think you get my point.
If people don't want opinions, they should phone their vet and stay away from Yahoo Answers!

the question was "why is it swollen". If the asker wanted your opinion on getting the dog spayed, that would have been the question.
There was one polite answer on here, where the person sayed the dog is in heat, and if you didnt plan on breeding her later to get her spayed. Just coming out with that mess about GET HER SPAYED is YOUR opinion and had nothing to do with the question.
Yes dear, they do want opinions, on the question they asked. If I asked whats a good BBQ sauce for pork ribs, I dont want some PETA head saying dont eat meat, only eat tofu. You get my point?

It is normal for the vulva (down there) to be swollen during heat. It will return to normal once heat is over. Do consider getting your dog spayed. It reduces the risk of cancer in dogs by a lot and prevents her from having unwanted pregnancies. Plus it'll keep the males from trying to get in your yard to get to your puppy.

She's in 'heat'. Her body is getting ready to become a Mommy. Keep her away from male dogs and get her spayed when she comes out of her cycle. If she is bleeding all over you can get her some doggie-underwear at any pet store and some pad to go in them.

Thats normal.
Unless you intend on her having pups i suggest you get her spayed ASAP. If you dont spay her she may develop mammary cancer: Estrogen is one of the primary causes of canine mammary cancer, the most common malignant tumor in dogs. Animals that are spayed prior to one year of age very rarely develop this malignancy. Spaying a dog before her first heat is the best way to significantly reduce the chance your dog will develop mammary cancer. The risk of malignant mammary tumors in dogs spayed prior to their first heat is 0.05%. It is 8% for dog spayed after one heat, and 26% in dogs spayed after their second heat.
Or possibly
Uterine infections: Many female dogs have problems with a severe uterine disease called pyometra following their heat cycles. With this disorder, a normal three-ounce uterus can weigh ten to fifteen pounds and be filled solely with pus. Undetected, this condition is always fatal. Its treatment requires either the use of expensive hormonal and IV fluid therapy or an extremely difficult and expensive ovariohysterectomy. A normal spay costs between £200 and £400, while one done to correct a pyometra can easily cost £1200 to over £2000, depending on complications. The strain on the kidneys or heart in some of these cases may be fatal or cause life long problems, even after the infected uterus has been removed.

Firstly a dog's 'period' is called 'being on heat' or 'in season'. My dog is in season at the moment too and she is swollen. It is normal. I don't know the exact reason why it goes like that though.

She is in heat. Be sure to keep her inside and away from other dogs. If you don't want this to happen again and don't plan on breeding her have her spayed when the heat is over.

It is due to the hormonal changes because she is in season which means that she can get pregnant - and will be very attractive to any unneutered males - so you need to protect her as if she is still a puppy she is too young to have puppies herself....

its normal for her to swell it'll go back down. She will swell down there so that if you want to mate her she be able to take the males thing its weird but dont worry its not a problem. My dog does that too but after about 14 days it goes back to normal.Just keep her away from any male dogs unless you want puppies that is.

she is in heat. This is normal dogs come in heat every 6 months. Keep her in sight at all times so male dogs dont get to her. Pet stores make doggie diapers till she is over this cycle, when she is thru you may want to get her fixed.
Good luck
