Where exactly is he scratching? If it's one place in particular, there could be a tiny foreign object there, or a place of localised infection.

If it's in many places, there are a number of possible causes. Are you positive it isn't fleas - have you checked for flea dirts with a comb? (those little black dots that signpost fleas even if you can't see the actual insects). If your cat is allergic to fleas, even ONE flea can cause this behaviour, so I hope you're using a veterinary flea prevention, and spraying the house too. It could also be ear mites, which can be prevented by using Revolution.

Bottom line is - you need to go to the vets to find out what this is and how to treat it, as your cat is obviously in great discomfort.

How do you know he has no parasites or fleas? Have you taken a flea comb and combed his whole body? What you are describing is a Flea Problem or severe allergies, you may have to take him him for a skin scraping to be sure. The 1st thing I would do just in case is to place the cat in a Mess Laundry bag with a zipper. This keeps it from jumping out of a tub or scratching you. Hartz makes a shampoo that comes in a blue Bottle that foams and it's for cats. It is very safe, I would place the cat in the tub run warm water over it and then wash it with this shampoo. Wait 5 min. watch for signs of fleas jumping off in the tub. Then rinse well, watch the cat close for improvement if you see flea's. If it's flea's you'll have to treat your house with carpet powder. Don't let the cat out. My cat is highly allergic to flea's. If 1 get 's on her she has an attack and will scratch and go bald!

Try the bath 1st, no flea's then the vet you must go!

Your cat may be allergic to something in your home or he could be allergic to insect or flea bites. My dog did the same thing and scratched until his hair came out.I took him to he vet and he said that even though he had flea protection to keep the fleas off, they would jump and bite and then jump off. You will have to take him to the vet to get something to stop him from itching.

The cat has something wrong internally. They scratch or lick as close to the problem as they can. See a vet right away.
