As long as the receptive language area and the brainstem (specifically cranial nerve 8, the auditory nerve) are intact, I believe they can. Regardless, if there is a portion of the cerebral cortex that still functions, they know you are there, but may not understand what you say.

Hi i am a nurse although have never worked in itu have read about it and talked with other nurses there is no set reaerch that can state either way although some patients report remembering certain events that occured around them while they were in a coma. hope this helps

No one REALLY knows. But I think they do. I remember at times being unconscious- or nearly so- while still hearing quite a lot.

i think so. my son was in a coma for 4 weeks we were advised to talk to him play music etc. it didn't do him any harm although he can't remember us talking to him i felt it may have helped. hes ok now

i really believe they do and can feel you holding their hand
it will make the visitor feel better too belief and trust is all we have to hold onto sometimes and belief and trust will get you through the darkest time and belief and trust can and does work miracles
