Try their free full-access three-day trial.
After that, its about $30/month.
The auto billing thing is prevalent everywhere, just about.

I subscribe to ancestry.co.uk and it has been the best value genealogy site I've ever used. I love it.
Because it's an annual flat fee, you can just fiddle around with different ideas, name spellings and possibilites about your family.
The official Scottish site is good too, but you have to pay for blocks of searches, so you've always got in mind how much the bill is racking up as you use it, and it's a bit off putting.
In the UK, many of the sites that are useful in America are of very limited use here, making ancestry.co.uk a really good option.
I also use genesreunited and get loads of interesting stuff there - but not very often!
If you're serious about family research you probably won't want to cancel your ancestry subscription anyway. I never have.

Yes I subscribe to Ancestry.com This was the BEST subscription I have done. I searched for 24 years to find my biological family and within days I had an email from a cousin I didn't know. I just got back from meeting her and an aunt. If you are searching for relatives- do this- there is so much info on that site!!!!

Yes I do and would be lost without access to their census images! There is no competition on that. You can pick and choose among services offered. There are a good number of free resources offered as well, the trees and message boards. You can upload or work right online and use their online tree for safe storage of your research that cannot be damaged by hard drive failure, fire, flood &c at your home computer. Subscriptions at ancestry.com also help fund rootsweb.com, if I recall correctly.

I used to and yes, that automatic renewal bugged me. I got zapped one time for it and then canceled the next time around. However, I do have to say that some of the information I was able to access was very helpful in my family creating a more accurate family tree. Of course none of these services ever give you every single item you want, but this wasn't too bad, once I got started.
