Hey MK,

Most of the sites will do the testing, no matter where you live. Here are some DNA sites, including a free one.

Most major universities will do it for you for a fee that may not be as expensive as you think (a few hundred quid should wrap it up nicely). Since there is a growing body or collection or archive of DNA records you might be able to find some interesting items (they have done a lot, and it's becoming even more common, to dna test every medieval skeleton that is being displaced by a new building or an expanded roadway).

I'm not sure why you'd want to limit your resources to only UK.

What I suggest is http://www.familytreedna.com/ which is done through the mail and likely as inexpensive as it gets, AND probably has the widest and most expanding database for genealogical comparison.

What you'd want to do is yDNA surname testing to be meaningful for genealogy, that means males only: yourself if male, or if female then your father, grandfather, brother, or same-surname male close cousin or father's brother (your uncle).

Here are two well-respected choices for people anywhere in Europe, including the U.K.:

iGenea http://www.igenea.com/

DNA Heritage http://www.dnaheritage.com/

Both labs offer a robust array of y-DNA and mtDNA services.
