Gnostics believed things of the flesh including the procreative act was evil. How could they believe Jesus was the promise one of God if they thought he was married and had a child.
They believed that the God of good created the spirit world and the God of evil created the material world and the flesh.
They rejected the Old Testament as it said God saw what he created and it was good.

You are correct about the Gnostics who were a heretical sect and condemned by the church, they caused a lot of confusion in the minds of simple people and left behind a lot of false teachings that had to be addressed.
Dan Browne was just a low level author who jumped on the bandwagon of religious controversy that has been ripe for the last few years,it is not hard to work out his motives for writing the Da Vinci code, money and fame being paramount to him, and of course he knew that anti-Christian forces would propel his novel to the top, and they most certainly did.

Doesn't everyone realise - that book was never intended to be believed. It was written as a work of fiction and has created the same kind of reaction that Orson Welles got with the radio presentation of War of the Worlds in (I think) the 1950s.
