My brother has been working under a lot of PRESSURE this whole week. This weekend he's told me he thinks he might have lost some short-period-memory-related facts. This has happened for the first time

He is wondering whether this might only be linked to what he had been going through -the whole week- at worlk.

Also, he has told me that his concentration -because of the PRESSURE he was facing at work- has not been as strong as it used to be in the prior weeks.

What could have happened to him??? I am worried.

Pressure itself can cause one to "forget how to remember".
Ever try to remember something like a persons name?
And the more you try to remember ...The more you can see his face but you just cant find the name......But once you try to think of something else the name just pops into mind...

Imagine the brain as an enormous filing system.with millions of file cabinets with each containing thousands of files.......Everything you have experienced...Everything you have learned is still "Up there".

The path to each file is association. When you see a new color...Your mind opens a cabinet and stores that stimuli under color. It will also file it away under the feelings felt when you saw the color......Several cabinets will hold cross linking data.

Association is the key to retrieval.....And under pressure we do not allow the natural associations to take place...

Your friend needs to remember to associate new data so he might want to intentionally set up "Real" cabinets for short term retrieval......Actually visualize a box and if a number is what he wants to remember.....File it away in the new numbers box...

Tell him to relax!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stress can cause the brain to race , and concentration to lapse. So it seems as though your brother's theory about pressure / stress causing the problem is correct !

When stressed , the brain is racing looking for solutions or ways out to the problems it is confronted with........and as you can't focus on both at the same time.......concentration is lost !

Good breathing technique can switch thestress off !

Breathe in for 8 hold it for 4 .....breathe out slowly.......do this a few times......and it calms the brain down.......tells the brain that the stressful time is over.......and things will return to normal.....until the next stress factor appears !

It is the easiest way to turn the "stress factor" off !

If he has a lot going on, it's not surprising that he forgets things. That happens to everyone. It's kind of foolish to expect that someone could remember everything.

Here is an article that talks about the effects of stress. Scroll down until you see the heading of Memory.

Also, it's pretty common knowledge that men are not exactly great at multi-tasking. Their brains are just not designed for that. They are better suited to focusing well on just one or two things at a time. It's a biology thing.

What your brother should do to help him remember is to write things down. It is proven that writing things down and repeating them help increase memory substantially.

His problem is more than likely stress related. He can evaluate how he may reduce the stress. No job in the world is worth losing your sanity over.
