Plan carefully, decide in advance what you want to do. Five days is not much. What would you do, for instance, in Europe in five days? Or the USA in five days? For a five day trip I would base myself in Sydney. Spend three or four days looking round the city then spend a day in the Blue Mountains. That is about all you will have time for.

You could spend five days in Cairns looking at the wet tropics and the Barrier Reef. You could spend five days in the Northern Territory at Alice Springs and Uluru then up to Darwin and Kakadu National Park. You could spend five days in and around Adelaide, or Melbourne, or Hobart, or Brisbane, or Perth. You could spend five days in Canberra, the national capital and take an excursion to Cooma and on to the Snowy Mountains. There is much you can do in five days but really only in one spot, so pick the spot.

Australia is very big and varied. You will be travelling for a long time for only 5 days. I would post again giving more information about the sort of things you would like to see (ie hot/cool/city/bush).

You should definitely find out about tour groups. Don't go around by yourself. Visiting the Opera House is a MUST! I have never been there myself, but if I were to go that is one of the first places I would see.
