most of mans laws that are set to govern us come from the 10 commandments

Why do you feel there is no use in following the 10 Commandments.
I'm not Christian, but I do know that some of our laws either come from or are akin to the commandments. It is against the law to kill, steal, bear false witness, and in some states it is still against the law to commit adultery

Jesus himself said that scripture cannot be broken and that HE came to fulfill the law not break the law. Therefore the 10 commandments still have merit to christians. I think what confuses people is when they say that we're under New Testament convenant and any and all requirements in the Old Testament are to be ignored-- not necessarily true.

Here's the story. The 10 commandments were given to man as a guideline on how God wants us to live our lives. The first 5 apply to our relationship with God and the second 5 apply to our relationship with man. However, the bible teaches that no man is able to perfectly keep ALL the commandments ALL the time. As far as salvation goes, the bible says that if we break one law, we have broken them all. So, what is man to do. Man needs to come to God the Father through Jesus the Son who paid our penalty for sin and obtained for us eternal life through his crucifixtion and resurrection. After we are saved we live through the power of the Holy Spirit who gives us the "power" to live life as pleasing to God as possible. None of us will be perfect until we are ressurected after death (or the rapture if that comes first) and have our perfect new body and minds.

Hope that wasn't too confusing.

Because we are all born in sin, that is to say, prone to fall under the temptation to break all 10+ commandments. But that is why Jesus is so important. His sacrifice paid for our sins and makes us righteous in the sight of God again. Its as if you broke a lot of laws, got arrested, and now sit in a dark jail cell. But someone you don't know pays your bail and sets you free. The jailer comes over, opens the cell, and tells you that someone has paid your bail and your free to go. But wouldn't you know it? Many people love that dark cell so much or just cant believe that someone would pay their bail like that (no questions asked) that they would rather stay locked up in the total darkness of their unbelief? So all what trying to obey all of the commandments will do is frustrate you into giving up into unbelief. God doesn't want that for anyone so He sent us a Savior in Jesus Christ.

the 10 commandments were given for life, but instead showed humans what they were. Jesus Christ came and died on the cross for our forgiveness and made us elegible to receive the Holy Spirit. We are new creatures now, we do not need laws to tell us what to do. "the law is for the lawless" per Paul. It seems to me what almost everyone misses(christians) is this new creature transformation. Its the only true way to say we are no longer under the law.

My Baptist friends tell me that the commandments are no longer valid because they pertain, supposedly, to old Jewish laws. But I can't get an answer when I ask them why they get upset if the commandments are removed from court houses, schools, etc.

Because we are no longer living under the Mosaic law, we are now living under grace, which is why Christ came! SORRY! He is the propitiation for our sins.
