Too many people migrate (I don't care if it's for political reasons or not) with no intention of becoming part of their new community or culture. I don't get it, why bother!

If you are forced into migration it shouldn't be any diferent. You will further your plight by isolating yourself.

I agree that new people/cultures can enrich.

It's more the self enforced isolation that I don't get.

I totally agree - all those ex pats in spain should definetly learn the language and start eating the local cuisine instead of opening up British theme pubs!

I assume this is what you mean

If you migrate in a country and are accepted by it, given work and social care you should be extremely grateful , integrate into it and try to understand its culture as much as you can. Beside your children, grandchildren and so on will one day be citizens of the country where you have migrated. On top of it if you integrate into the country it will make your life much easier and you will have more friends. At the same time even if only for respect to your ancestors, you should not forget the country and the culture from where you come from no matter how bad it is and how badly it has treated you.

I remember that in the beganning opf this school I did this report on immigration . AND it taught me that when the immigrants got to ellis island and they had to wait in different lines for different chekcs medical , backround and a check to see what they were brining into the country. Some time immigrants were seperated form there familes because they may of had a deisce that they had caught form back home and they were sent into a medica; care and some were turned back . Its very hard to be an immigrant comeing to a new country.
But yes you should as an immigrant to this country become acust to it

I think yes they should. They have come to the country and should make an effort to be part of the community and social group. If a group of peoples do not integrate they are seen as outsiders. However, more so, if a group of people are not given fair chance to integrate, the same problems arise.

I don't think any comments relating this to the American "home of the free" argument can be made valid here. The American - European/African/Asian settlers completely wiped almost every trace of the true American culture. So claiming a culture of their own, is truly alien to the land anyway.

The government has made it too easy for Spanish speaking people to not prosper by making sure everything is in Spanish, as well as English. They don't have to learn English because of this, and it actually makes life more difficult for them. My ancestors came from Poland in the early 1900s, and there was no Polish/English material to help them around. They were forced to learn English. Every generation of my family has gotten better and better. Other than that, I feel that adding all the different cultures and traditions into the community is what makes America, America.

I absolutely agree that migration can enrich the host community but would also agree with the Australian P.M. who said that if people were unwilling to respect the laws and culture of that country then they should go elsewhere.

The problem is that so often the new countries do not facilitate the assimilation at all, as it is the case with immigrants from new EU countries coming to UK. Presumably, it is silmilar to Lationoamericans in USA.

Today's immigrants into the US (both legal and illegal) are responding to a gold-plated invitation from employers to displace American workers.

As such, their premise is economic-only; they intend to 'have their cake and eat it too' by retaining all of their prior language, cultures and loyalties, while treating our citizenry like the fools we are for allowing this to take place.

Anyone knows that only conquered countries have to adopt the language and customs of its colonizers; welcome to the New American Colonies.
