In other words, apparentely building muscel mass is an added way to lose unwanted body fat (in addition to cardio obviously) because muscel will burn fat simply by being muscel.

Does anyone know if this is true and if it is, how and why is it so.

Thank you all for any insight.

with out getting too scientific yes it is true.

stored fat gets converted to the cellular energy source ATP. when muscle tissue is at rest (sleeping, watching tv, light house work, walking, etc.) the primary energy source comes from the metabolization of fatty acids from fat cells which then get converted to ATP. so basically the more muscle mass that a person has the greater the amount of ATP that is needed so a higher rate of fatty acids would be metabolized for use as energy.

muscel does not exactly "burn fat simply by being muscel" but it does take more calories to maintain muscel so the more muscel u have the more calories your body need and uses.... which means YOU CAN EAT MORE YUMMY FOOD!!! but dont over do it....=).

btw - muscel needs/uses about double the calories of fat

well I know fat cells are really weird because they don't go away, they just get bigger and smaller. Fat stores nutrients or energy and stuff right?

I think that when you build muscles, your muscles take all the nutrients and energy and use it up. that way you don't have any leftover that is stored in fat, and you use the stuff that is stored in your fat.

I'm not sure if this is right, but that's how i thought it was.

If you burn 3000-3500 calories, you lose 1 pound of weight roughly. Keep in mind, this is versus any calories you're intaking as well.
