April 14, 2007 - Haven’t done your taxes yet? If not, you’re in good company—with the deadline extended to April 17 this year, millions of honest taxpayers still have yet to file. In the rush to get them done on time, many may turn to the Web to file electronically.

April 17 is last day because April 15th falls on a Sunday (Federal Offices Closed) and April 16th is Emancipation Day in Washington D.C. Therefore you have a two day grace.

The Irs website says the deadline is Tuesday, April 17.
The 15th is a Sunday. I don't know why it isn't Monday. That's a state holiday in Massachusetts but not in the rest of the country as far as I know.
