personally I think your hand should be chopped off, but you will probably only have to pay a fine and maybe community service

First offence? should it read first offence of many to come?
It doesn't matter if it was $.01 or in your case $6.50 and that store had to pay for them. If its your first offence it doesn't matter, you still stole. You should have just paid for them, if I steal $10 out of your purse, is it a big deal? its my first offence.
The answer to the criminal record side of things. You can get a court date, and yes you can get a record for this offence. I am not sure where you live but in Canada its called theft under $5000, in short a criminal offence.
Your sentence can range from paying money to a charity, probation, paying the store, writing a letter of apology or jail time.
In the future pay for your stuff. Then you wouldn't be scared. Its only $6.50 earrings this time, whats the next time gonna be? and the time after that? first time is no excuse its wrong.
Your lucky thats all you have to worry about. In some cultures they chop off your hand. Then you live with it forever, and everyone knows your a thief. I would own to your mistake, accept the consequence, and move on, and never participate in this activity again.

If they have charged you and you have a summons to appear before the courts for shop lifting yes it will go on your record. When you become 18 or 21 not sure of which your juvenile record is closed. How ever it will follow you for the rest of your life. When applying for work your record will say in 2007 you had a crime it can't be disclosed but it will be there. You can never be bonded or bond-able for any job with money! Or with security. Crossing the boarder is out as well with a record. It doesn't pay now does it. After so many years you can have it expunged. This means if you don't get into anymore trouble in so many years you can apply to the courts to remove it from your permanent record.

man EVERYTHING goes on your record. if i were u, RETURN THEM... GET OFF THE COMP AND RETURN THEM! if u dont, they might charge u with "resisting", "planning it" and several other things. if u dont return it, i guarrentee your sentence will be at least doubled. but as for the sentence, that is about what the overall people think. so it could be random between a $10 find and a $100 fine, and there might also be a few days of jail time. (i wouldnt think more than a week.)
but it doesnt matter that they were a pair of earring worth $6. u could have stolen 6 rolls of toilet paper and it wouldnt matter on the cost. the part that will mostly affect u, IS THE FACT U DID IT, not the THING u took, but the fact u TOOK it. but if u dont return them NOW, it will get VERY VERY BAD. and the longer it takes, the worse it gets.

It depends on how the manager/owner of the store wishes to proceed- they probably won't go to court over such a small amount, but may ask that you receive some sort of community service/counseling. If you are prosecuted and found guilty, it will go on your record. However, if you are a minor, it will no longer be on your record once you turn 18.
I'm sure you are a good kid who just did a really stupid thing. Try to remember in the future that really stupid things, no matter how small, can have BIG consequences. Don't screw up your life over $6. Good luck.

Shoplifting is shoplifting - not the amount. If it were over a certain amount, you'd be looking at grand theft. At least this is a misdemeanor. Your sentence will likely be probation. I see two good things in your question. You said "I stole", so you admit you made a mistake. That's a great start. You said "I'm scared", and that's and even better next step. You should be scared because this can ruin your whole life if you choose to do it again. Great job admitting and the problem and facing the courts. You are going to do great.

Yep. So was it worth it. Not to mention by the time the court is done with you it's gonna cost a whole lot more than 6.50, and you still wont have the earrings. When its all over with ask yourself again, Was It Worth It.

WHY DO YOU BELIEVE FOR A SECOND THAT YOU ARE ENTITLED TO SOMETHING YOU HAVE NOT EARNED, PAYED FOR, OR DESERVE. Why do you want to steal? You are a miserable creature and will for the rest of your life rely on others to support you. You want to defraud others?
To answer your question, if you are under 18, your records will be sealed and no one may view them. Ever. If you are over 18 and get the same charge, it follows you your entire life. No employer will hire a theif, if a landlord wants to do a crim. check then you will have trouble getting a place to live, your family and friends will not trust you, and honestly, theives have no place in society and do not even deserve the air that they are sadly entitled to.

Many dept stores are setting up a database of shoplifters who were caught and are sharing it.
Shoplifting costs everybody a lot of money, and the stores are tired of it. What was a nuisance is now a nightmare.
Someoe does it, everybody pays. You could get off with a warning, but if you ever ever get caught again, this will show up.So, in the future, don't!

You may get community service, retribution to the store and/or the court may want you to go for some type of counseling. Yes, it will go on your record. Assuming you are a minor I don't think it will follow you through life providing you keep your nose clean.
