I found out i had mono last week, and that i wasn't supposed to play contact sports. i'm on a very competitive national volleyball team and i already missed a big tournament. in 2 weeks theres another big tournament that i'd really like to play in, but my doctor said i'm not supposed to play for 8 weeks (ridiculous?). do you think that 3-4 weeks is not a long enough wait to play, considering the effects it may have on my liver and spleen and overall fatigue.

When I had mono a few years back my doctor told me that I couldn't play any contact sports for 4-6 weeks. I would wait at least that. It's really not worth risking. Especially since you really like sports. It would suck to mess something up and then not be able to play for a really long time ya know? Good Luck!
Sorry you are sick. Mono sucks. I was miserable. I ended up in the hospital with mine b/c it took the doctors so long to identify it.

The liver and especially the spleen enlarge when you have mono. The persistence and severity of enlargement varies from person to person. If you were to receive a blow to the ribs, you risk rupture and massive internal bleeding. While this complication is not common, it is extremely serious.

A good doctor can get only a rough estimate of liver or spleen size by palpation and percussion. Other tests - ultrasound, CT scan or MRI - are just too expensive to do routinely. Thus, the safest course of action is to recommend no contact sports for a certain period after recovery.

Well, Mono isn't a life long disabling disease. You should just wait until your better and back to your full health. That way when you do play, you'll be at the top of your game.
