toxoplasmosis can cause optic nerve damage in the eye.
This is a parasite in the blood. Not contagious, but you will not feel wonderful. It can lay dormant for many years, then it will flare up. It forms a blister on the eye, which burst and leave a scar. Can be contracted from raw vegetables (soil not washed off), cats mess, sheep.
