It depends upon the formality, but for the most part, black tie or very dark blue seems the best.

Yes: specifically a black tie. Not as in "a black tie function", which implies a lot more, but a black tie worn with a proper shirt and trousers is essential.

No it's not essential. Wearing a suit and tie (any color) is a traditional way to show respect, though, to both the deceased and the grieving family. Whatever you do, please don't wear jeans or anything too casual. If it's an outfit that you'd wear to a party or a bar, then it's definitely too casual to wear at a funeral.

No, not at all, unless it's a state funeral or something along those lines. I've been to more than my share of funerals in my life, and men wear their best suit for church, and women wear their best go to church dress. Out of respect. I wore an ivory dress suit to my mother's, and a green dress to my father's. So don't think about the color of your tie. It's your presence that they'll remember.

A funeral would not be considered a traditional black tie event. It's a celebration of homegoing/time of mourning -- depending on how your culture/tradition views it.

It depends on your rerlationship with the deceased. If he/she was a close relative or friend then black should be worn unless a request has been made that black should not be worn.
If the relationship was more distant, black is fine but so also would another darkish colour.
