Because Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to teach us, lead us, and guide us in the things of God.

It's interesting, because I recently heard the idea that we are all collectively God - that our own will and intention is what makes this existence go. In that case, the concept of Good and Evil would be kind of a steering mechanism - don't you think? I mean, if our collective consciousness would influence our lives and the events in our world, one could easily see that getting more people to think about peace than war was essential - and getting more people to be "good", "aligned with the Light", and "using their powers for good verses evil" would be crucial for the continued existence of Earth.

I find this idea fascinating, because we are now trying to be convinced about Global Warming, the end of the world and total anhialation with World War 3 (from various sources). If the above theory would be correct, then the more of us that are convinced of these terrible things could weigh against and unbalance the idea of a Star Trek Federation future that many of us hold if we are not careful.

If you are instead talking about a personification of God and the example Jesus sets as a way of life - I think those guidelines are set to try to help people have an easier time on Earth. It might seem easier to lie at first, but being truthful is easiest (and ultimately healthier) in the long run, for example.

Peace!
