To be honest, I think it's because they'll believe almost anything some people tell them. I don't mean to offend, but I'm Native American and we didn't have any golden plates or any of that that I ever heard in our traditional stories. Someone who believes that would believe anything, I think.

I am LDS, and I all I can say is thankfully these days we have more members outside of the US than inside the US, so people can stop thinking Utah culture is any actual representation of our doctrines.
I don't know why Utah culture is that way - I do know that it's a "right to work" state because there are lots of highly educated people in Utah, the wages are extremely low compared to the same jobs in other states. Perhaps that's what leads people to search for supplemental income sources.

As Latter-day Saints, we believe that we are the covenant people of the Lord. Many Utah Saints take that one step further and say that it is fitting that the covenant people of the Lord should have everything that they desire. This results massive amounts debt, multilevel marketing and get rich quick scams in order to receive all the "blessings" that they believe that they are "entitled" to.
The funny part about this is that Church leaders have counselled heavily against this. They have said that Church members should be debt free and should work for what they earn.

Honest people believe other people are also honest. So when some one tells them a business deal they assume the other person is honest.
In Utah the taxes are high, the families are bigger and the salaies are smaller therefore people in utah are always looking for a way to earn a little extra cash.
