I want to get a tat, and it's original, I can't find any designs or anything, online, or anywhere. It's going to be a simple cross with a bit of scripture around it, nothing too complicated, all black, and fairly small. My question is, do I need to get a stencil for it, cause I've heard that your absolutely not supposed to get a tat without one. I would think they might be able to make one, or just free hand it.

Do I need one?

And oh yeah, I basically suck at drawing, I mean, I have a little drawing of it, but it's not exactly how I want it, because I suck at drawing, think I could just get by by explaining it to him off of my drawing?

And oh yeah, I'm (thank God) not stupid enough to just have him free hand it without drawing it on paper or something first, lol. If I ever get that stupid, some one kill me, please.......

A drawing that your tattoo artist will turn into a stencil is what they need. Or if they can freehand it

Yes you need one. If a tattoo artist were to needle in something freehand it may turn out badly or not at all like what you wanted. It would not be his fault though since he had no stencil or picture to go by. You may get stuck with a bad tat and no one wants that.

There's a tattoo artist which lives close to my house and he will draw anything you like for a small fee. Once he has drawn it you may ask him to make some small changes with no extra charges. Once he has drawn the picture of what you want he can then make a stencil. He will go by that to give you your tat.

Never let someone give you a tat without a stencil as it may come out badly and once you get a tat that you don't like there's no eraser to make it look better.

No you don't need a stencil. Explain what you want to an artist or they may have what you want. They make up a transfer sheet with the design and put in on you. Now, there is a popular tattoo shop in Miami that makes you do all the work first so unless you are going there my answer would be about right unless it's done free handed.

Most tattoo artists will use a stencil (by which I mean a sort of transfer of the outlines of the design, so they'll have something to guide them while they're tattooing you). However, they make these up themselves, either by tracing the design they're going to use onto a special sort of carbon paper, or by using a heat transfer machine.

If you have a specific design in mind, take along any reference images of what you want, or any little sketches you've done (don't worry, they'll unerstand if drawing isn't your strong point) and get your artist to draw up a design. Yes, explaining it to them should be just fine - they're used to it! Once you're happy with the resulting design, they'll make up the transfer from their drawing.

Hope this helps - and have fun getting tattooed!

yes you need a stencil. You go to the tattoo artist tell them your idea and then theyll draw it up for you. I dont think a good artist would just draw one on you unless they are really really good. That way you wont hate it. Also the stencil is meant so if you dont like where it is on your body they can move it.

No you do not need a stencil. Yeah just go up there with your drawing and tell him how you want to modify it. he'll draw it up for you and let you see it, and if you don't like it he'll fix it til you do. if you do like it he'll do it. I have nine tats, only 3 were done professionally. My ex would draw it up on paper, backwards of course, and put some clear deoderant on my body (for the drawing to attach to) and he would put the drawing on there. Hed then tattoo away!!! Simple, but timely, one time he was tattooing me for 3 hours!!! My suggestion for you, ask to see their "book" its a collection of their work. That way you know if they might suck, if they don't have one, then RUN!! Good luck!

Thousands of people
everyday get inked
without stencils. Just
go to a good artist and
have him draw up something.
They are pretty good at
listening and understanding
just what it is you are trying to
get across. It will usually come
out better than you originally thought.

free handing is only usually used on emensly complicated designs which are far too complicated to use a stencil

for a simple cross just use the stencil

they'll make a stencil for you. Just tell your tattoo artist your idea and they'll draw it for you and make sure you like it first and / or make any changes you want.

Take your ideas to your artist, and they should be able to draw it for you. There is a reason they are called "artists", you know! =0)
