Science has proved the existance of "dark" or "black" energy. What is it? its source? and what is its role?

If such mode of energy exists and is everywhere and in exessive supply, can't it provide us with the solution for the ever persisting crisis of energy?
It can also solve the disturbing problem of polution!

Science has NOT proved that. Science has ASSUMED that such things exist to explain problems with some theories, and science is trying very hard to prove that it really does exist, but so far has not been able to.
