Actually we can drink herbal teas (just not the black, grey, green - actual tea leaf varieties).

But it comes down to what we call the Word of Wisdom which is a spiritual and physical health code we believe in. It also involves abstaining from illegal (or abusive) drug use, alcohol, and tobacco products. It also teaches us to seek out a generally healthy diet.

There are lots of reasons for this (obvious health benefits - LDS people tend to live an average 8 years longer), but the biggest reasons are spiritual - our bodies and spirits are very connected, and a lot of it has to do with keeping our spirits sensitive to the promptings of the Holy Ghost.

Thanks

Mormons believe in a code of health, often referred to as the "Word of Wisdom," which directs members to eat healthy foods. Items that are considered "unhealthy" would be coffee, tea and tobacco. The reason? Because they contain caffeine which has been determined to be unhealthy. Joseph Smith, back in the 1830's received guidance from the Lord to include this Word of Wisdom into the doctrine. Nowadays, it is proving to be scientifically substantiated.

It's not because we're "stupid", like the first few answers said. LDS believe in the Word of Wisdom, which outlines principles of healthy living. Tobacco, alchohol, tea, and coffee are the "hot drinks" that the Lord was referring to.

Because it is believed that coffee or tea (basically caffeine) pollutes the body and interrupts your connection with the Holy Spirit. If you have no connection, then you are open to lies and the influence of the advisary.

The church has what we called "the word of wisdom",
I called it a healthy commandment.

The word of wisdom also teaches retire early, wake up early
no smoking, no alcoho. etc.

I personally do not take soda either considering all those sugar that put into it.

people may call us weird or crazy, but I'm sure my blood is cleaner than people who take coffee or tea.

It is not that we "can't". It is that we choose not to.

There are guidelines in all avenues of life and it is a choice as to what each of us decides.
