My wife and I are relocating to Sacramento so she can attend school at UC Davis. I'll probably be working somewhere between midtown and Fair Oaks. We are unfamiliar with the area and are looking to rent an apartment in a "quaint" or "artsy" part of Sacramento - if there is one. What I mean by "quaint" is basically a section of the city (or nearby suburbs) where one can walk to coffee shops, bookstores, parks, ride a bike, etc. (not necessarily chain stores that are characterized more by "sprawl," but more independent-type stores); a place where someone in their 20's or 30's with a kind of "artsy flair" would find comfortable. Does anyone familiar with the Sacramento area have any suggestions to share with us on where to live or avoid living based on the foregoing scenario?

Midtown would be the best place to live. From what I know, the area between 20th and 30th streets are pretty comfortable. There are lots of things on J St. and surrounding areas. You could also try some parts of Downtown.

You didn't say where you are relocating *from* as that might be helpful in comparing what you currently like. Right off the bat, I would recommend midtown. It's a mixture of old and newer residences. Best to just drive around and see what blocks look good. Also, Curtis Park is very artsy with a couple of small shopping/dining streets, but I'm not sure how many apartments there are. If your wife is going to school at UC Davis Med Center, the Elmhurst neighborhood near there is cool. If she is going to be at UC Davis, I agree with what others have said, Davis is a nice community too. To avoid the chains, do not move to Elk Grove, Folsom, Natomas or Roseville. You can always drive there and visit.

Downtown Sacramento sounds like the place for you. The best places to consider are the Land Park, Curtis Park or McKinley Park areas. These areas are all older homes and apartments that are on tree lined streets and close enough to local shopping and artsy type stores. Downtown Sacramento also has some nicer areas in the Santa Ynez Street area. These areas can be pricey, but there are still some good deals to be had in apartments and shared home areas. You are close to Old Town Sacramento and the Fabulous Forties areas.
I also would not discount some areas in Davis or Dixon. Davis is a small college town with very nice areas close to the University itself. Some of these areas are great for young people with lots of artsy places to visit on bike or foot. Dixon still has a small town feel and is close to Sacramento and Davis.

Davis is what you are looking for - smaller town, artsy, coffee shops, lots of bicyclists, not many chain stores, etc. It is a little more expensive than Sacramento, but I think you would find it well worth spending the extra in rent and gas to drive into Sac for work. If you really want to live in Sac I would suggest checking out the midtown area as others have suggested. Places to avoid would be South Sac, West Sac, most of Rancho Cordova and most of Antelope. Nice places (but not ones with the criteria you mentioned) are Folsom, Granite Bay, Roseville and Natomas area of Sac.

there is some nice areas downtown but be careful things change in just a few blocks either way. Davis is a better choice but more pricey
