I am a new mother and want my child to be smart, yet well rounded. Why are some children so smart? Any ideas?

I would like suggestions on teaching techniques, educational materials, websites, books or movies that anyone feels are good tools to help me raise an exceptional child. I am a work at home mom and have all the time in the world to dedicate to my child, I just want it to be productive.

First, think of developing your child's cognitive ability in a wholistic manner. You have to consider his physical development, emotional (psychological) development, and cognitive development. So you want to pay attention to his diet, provide a loving and nuturing environment, and expose him to wonderful experiences. Try to develop and encourage his love for learning by living the example and making a big deal with significant and small accomplishments. Reading to him every night is one of the best things that you can do. As well, classical music in the home and lots of exercise are very important. Don't ever think that there is something that he cannot learn something. If you find something too challenging, back off and come back to it in a few months. Make sure you expose your child to a couple of foreign languages through music and/or play.

Then just have fun with him and use every teachable moment you can find to teach. Keep it fun and light. This is all the nuturing part; the rest will be up to nature (or how God made him).

Remember that stress can adversely effect your child's ability to learn.

I don't agree with the "its in the genes" comment. I believe that if you find a childs learning style even if different from your own, you will have a smart, well rounded child.

Some people are visual learners, some auditory, some are kinesthetic..most are a mixture of two or more styles. Most public schools are based on those children with visual learning styles. That is why you have some that are straight A students, they just read the material and grasp it. Most people out there are kenesthetic and tactile learners. That means you have to touch it, feel it, experience it to understand it. So many children in public school fall through the cracks or labeled learning disabled because of this (IMHO).

If you approach your child with a wide variety of media such as books on tape, videos, plays, hands on experiences your child will retain knowledge of any subject. And you will have an intelligent child. Just remember to make learning fun and enjoyable. They will learn faster if its fun and remember it better as well.

Most of it is genetics...smart parents have smart children. Although it is possible to raise your childs IQ a little bit by giving them stimulating environments. Try to give your child a lot of learning experiences, instead of just teaching them from books. Travel is a great way to do this. Give them as many educational experiences as you can. Also try to make learning hands-on and fun. The most important thing is that your child learns to love learning. That way they will continue to enjoy learning new things throughout their lives.

I disagree with the genetics argument- I firmly believe that it all comes down to how hard a child is willing to work to understand something. Personally, I'm not the brightest kid by any strech- in fact, I'm pretty darn average. But because I work hard, I seem bright to my peers, since I understand concepts that they have no grasp of- but I dedicate much more time to understanding things than they do. The best thing you can do now is to nurture a love of learning in your child- read books together, do math problems, teach them to write, draw, paint, sing, whatever! Just encourage them to do what they love as well as they possibly can. If they see that learning is fun, then they'll love it. The worst thing you can do is plunk them in front of the TV and let them figure it out- YOU need to set the example for them. And don't force them to do anything! If they are to love learning, they need to have a positive reaction to it.
As the principle goes: repeated exposure to any stimulus will make the person crave the stimulus more, provided the reaction the stimulus is not negative. If you can provide your child with the means to really appreciate and love to learn, you are giving them the best gift you can possibly give them.

My concept is that allot of what a little one turns into is discovered through it is genetics after which helped out or hampered through how it's raised and what different matters it studies. So, you cannot carry the "ultimate" human in view that you will get a little one that does not have the power to kick a ball in view that of allergic reactions or what ever and would have finding out disorders and so forth. No dad or mum finally ends up in no way creating a mistake regardless of how a lot attempt we placed into it . Just do your high-quality while the time comes and forgive your father and mother for being human now so you do not waste time feeling envious.

The reason that some children are so smart is because they learn things on their own and they get it from their parents. In school the kids reads material and do work ahead for they will know it.

The most important thing is not how "smart" your children are. What matters most is that they grow up in the training and admonition of the Lord.

I congratulate you for your aim, but I want to tell you that you love your child and support him with your love & patience, he will do his best and then he will decide the best life he wants to be. Encourage him when he is right, correct him when he is wrong but never draw his life, let him decide. He will love you as much as you love him; good luck to both of you.

I am also a stay at home mom and I want the same for my kids. I work with them everyday. I have made things for my kids to help them with their numbers and letters. For example, I made a caterpillar out of construction paper and wrote their ADC's on it. It hangs on the wall in their room. I printed off coloring books with their numbers in them so they can learn how to count. If you make it fun for them they will learn, and want to learn a lot more..
