Good for you! No, I believe now that they are trained, it'll be fine. They'll get over not having a treat. Be prepared it's possible they might have an accident still.

If you just stop giving treat altogether one day, you could have a problem. Remember the treats need to be given along with enthusiastic verbal praise from you as well.
Gradually wean them off treats. Start by every other time they go they get a treat. Then every third, then every fourth. Then really change it up. You want to keep them guessing as to when they get a treat.
When dogs aren't sure when to expect a treat, they will often times become even more enthusiastic about something.
Eventually you will be able to just use verbal praise when your dog goes, but you still want to give a treat every now and then just to reinforce the behavior.

Now that you have them going outside and it sounds like it's all of the time, you should start weaning them off of the treats, or you'll have some chubby yorkies very quickly.
Now, about every other time that they come in from doing their business, distract them with physical praise. Squat down and using a very happy voice give them the the 'Good Babies' and lots of patting, then leave it at that. The first couple of times, they may act slightly confused but they will begin to welcome the physical praise and joyously as they welcome the treats. Wean them away from the treats for going potty and keep stuff like that for really special behavior. Remember, physical praise doesn't make for a chubby dog.

Hi Ryan,
I love yorkies! House breaking is always a tough one. My dog trainer had to train me how to do this so here it goes. They should be crated. Take them out every hour on the hour immediately from the crate to the outside as you are doing this in a high pitched voice say "outside" once they do their business, praise them again by using a high pitched voice. I don't use treats with pups because it can complicate the house breaking process by making them have to defecate more frequently. Feeding them at regular times also helps. If they are under 4 months old, feed them 3 times per day. Put a measured amount of food down. If they eat it all great. If they don't eat it when you put it down, leave it down for only 15 minutes then take it away and put it down again 6 hours later. If they do eat, take them out 20 minutes after they eat. Once you know their regular schedule by taking them out hourly you can increase the size of their space inside the house by a few feet until they are house broken. In little breeds it can take up to 18 months for them to be completely broken. Don't get discouraged! Oh! They should have water at all times.
Best wishes,
Pam

I train our Brussels Griffons the same way..but the time has come to wean them once you're sure they've become dependable. Give them lots of praise everytime, even if you're planning to give them a treat. Then don't give a treat, just give the praise. My babies love to be picked up and have me rub my face on their little faces. You want them to learn to obey to please you...not to get the treats. Besides, too many treats makes for a fat dog! Eventually, they'll be content to get your praise alone...with an occasional, unexpected reward of an edible treat.
BTW, use treats whenever you're training them to do anything new. Use the same technique as described above. You don't have to give them much...just the tiniest piece will make them happy no matter what their size. Good luck and above all...Have fun!!

No, it is not a new thing. Trainers have been giving rewards for eons for good behaviour. They are earning their treats at this time. Don't just stop all of a sudden, gradually decrease the treats or not. If you are watching their weight use their kibble as treats. Enjoy your dogs.

Yeah, that's the problem with the reward system. Your dog has got to do as you say "because you said so." Out of loyalty. You shouldn't be afraid to correct your dog; their obedience to their masters is key to their survival in the human world, and whatever discomfort that must be rendered should be put in perspective. The consequences of disobedience can be altogether more severe than the negative reinforcement of a loving master.

How funny! They are trained to get treats every time they relieve themselves.
I don't think its necessarily bad, rewards is a good way to train dogs (and people)..glad you had success.
Some small dogs are hard to housebreak.

Well, you've taught them now that every time they go outside, they get rewarded. Keep it up with the treats for awhile, until it's firmly cemented into their brains that they go outside, then gradually wean them off.
