there are many reasons that can cause what you are experiencing. If you work on a computer all day that can cause problems with the hands. Also if you sleep on your side it could be causing problems with your neck and the nerves going down to your hands.
You need to have a good evaluation by a physical therapist or a chiropractor so that you can get help with this problem. You probably need hand supports so that your muscles are not overused. You may need a special pillow for your neck.
When you have this sensation place an ice pack on the back of your neck for ten minutes and see if this helps.
I've enclosed a website listing qualified chiropractors.

It could be a lot of things, but I have the same thing, and my doctor says it is carpal tunnel. I wear a wrist brace at night and it does wonders. Try it. You can either get them through your doctor, or at your local grocery store. Make sure you get one that has a hard metal support in it.
If you are doing any repetitive motions throughout your day, stop at various times and relax your hands.

It's positional. I'm guessing you type or otherwise use your hands at work all day?
You want to wear something- can be elastic, over-the-counter splints or supports so your wrist is prevented from bending in your sleep. I bet it helps.

Like someone has already said, carpal tunnel syndrome. Bet it is the hand that you aren't lying on as well...cos I get that.
I would see your doc about it, as the braces you can get are ok, but if you live in the Uk, you can get them made so that they hold your hand at the correct angle to prevent it. But to get them made, you have to see your Doctor..and he refers you to the hospital where you have them made.

if you're not lying on them you could have a circulation problem. I used to have it when I was overweight but now that I've lost some weight the problem is gone
