Actually, you could sell 1 home in Scottsdale arizona and feed half of africa, food there is pretty cheap. Even though we Americans send a great deal of our money to charities, not very much of it actually meets the people it is meant for. This is because you have to pay for advertising, pay the workers all across the world trying to gather funds, pay the people in Africa giving their time, which may also include lodging and food for some volunteers. Quite honestly, it wouldn't cost very much to feed them all, for a short period, but the amount of money it would cost to "fix up" Africa so they could subsist on their own without world help, will be much more. Sure, we can feed them all for a day, but what's a day? We need to give them access to resources so they can do it for themselves.

To Yoda above, please do not talk about what you don't know, what you call a FACT is simply your own (incorrect) opinion. Take an anthropology course and read "why can't people feed themselves" You will see how wrong you are. Also, I live in a desert, full of arid and arable land, you can't grow crops if there's no water, and in Africa there are no irrigation systems except within cities.

Yes it would feed the starving in Africa. The hard part would be keeping the intended food money out of the hands of the Murderers who are waging genocide there. Then there is the question of is the Catholic church willing to give up the gold? I would guess no. Also what about the value of the piece as an historic artifact versus the simple value of $680 per oz.

Who told you that Africa needs to be fed: just let the western world cut their financing of regimes that thrive on corruption and gross indulgence for just a year and Africa will not only feed herself(or is itr itself?) but, consequently, the gold reserves at the Vatican will also dwindle.

Wow, what an excellent idea! looks somewhat drastic and what a transition in the event you stay there. perchance, only perchance the Vatican ought to lease out rooms to travelers who lengthy to be close to the Pope. the money would nicely be used for the hungry and homeless. I do might want to assert only for those left out by using the greediness of others. it is a very lengthy record! ought to travelers bypass if the Vatican put in an opulent pool with a "all you may drink bar"? sturdy question... I don't know that to be true...but even if you could...how would you feed them the next day?

If we were to do that with all things...everyone in the world donate all their gold and silver to help feed the poor and hungry. We would run out of gold and silver long before we ran out of poor and hungry.

I heard that if all the world's wealth was distributed equally amongst every household or person (not sure of the specifics) - each would have around 3 million dollars.
It just shows how much greed is in the world.

Yes, yes we could. Also, if we took all the money America alone has spent on war over the last 20 years, not only could we feed and clothe the whole world several times over, we could transform the entire planet into a unified civilisation and explore space together. Makes you think doesn't it.

Rome, could feed all the poor, for centuries to come.

I think that stands for all religions who make "houses worship" more opulant then needed , while the worshipers can barely find food for thier families. i am muslim i can pray in the grass under a tree and thats fine with me. i would rather see my ppl well housed and fed and i think that would please God more then anything.

If africa cannot feed itself, why should anyone else do it?
The FACT is; that this story of African poverty and insufficient food is a myth.
There is enough arable land on the African continent to feed the entire planet. But politics being what they are, they cannot find the time to stop shooting each other in petty tribal warfare to stop and co-operate.
Personally I say let them. Then clear out the corpses and let those who CAN cooperate manage the land.
