Padre Pio suffered with unexplained stigmate "the wounds of Christ" for a very long time, doctors tried to figure out a reason, and put him under surveillance, to see if he was inflicting it upon himself. He was found to have true stigmata and lived with it for 50 years. After his death the stigmata instantly disappeared.
I am divided on both explainations
1. Stigmata is from God, thus why it "magically instantly disappeared.
2. Stigmata was brought about by Padre Pio's brain, thus when the brain stops functioning stigmata goes away.

What do you think?

Good question Mantazma,I have read a lot about Padre Pio in my time and I have come to believe that he was a genuine stigmatist, and I also realize that some people due to some form of mental state can induce symptoms that resemble stigmata as well.
This does not seem to be the case with Padre Pio,the overwhelming evidence of professional medical experts both Catholic and non-Catholic have vouched for his sanity and even his holiness.
Padre Pio was very much humbled by his stigmata and asked God in prayer many times to take it away from him untill he realized that it had a real purpose both for him personally and for others too,it enabled him to reach a level of obedience and humility that few of us will ever experience, and by his suffering he was the cause of hundreds of conversions.
Stigmata and miracles are tough for us to comprehend we live our lives in the here and now which is what we call normality, but when God intervenes in our normality it is a supernatural event that we find very hard to come to terms with, but the fact remains that God can and does enter our normality and leaves us challenged and questioning.

Padre Pio was a true stigmatic who bore the wounds of Christ willingly on his body for FIFTY YEARS! Yeah, sure he was a fraud Yoda! You are full of it!

If he 'willed' the Stigmata, that STILL resulted in visible, tangible, physical injury. Put another way, If you inflict injury upon yourself intentionally or not, that physical injury will persist even after death. The fact that the Stigmata 'disappeared' after his death is in itself another proof of God's interaction. He was finally at rest and no longer had to share the pain of Christ. Padre Pio was a real, 'living' Saint, a friend of Christ who lived and died in God's friendship. Now he is a Saint in Heaven.

I think it is real and a miracle. Padre Pio isn't the only one who had the stigmata.

It has been proved to happen to others.

Do you know of any psychotic happenings in which people will themselves to bleed for 50 years? Not necessarily with the wounds of Christ...but with any wounds? I've never heard of such a thing.

I believe that it is a great suffering and blessing to have the stigmata.

. Stigmata was brought about by Padre Pio's brain, thus when the brain stops functioning stigmata goes away.

Serves no practical purpose.
God does not run a sideshow.
You sited him. There are others and 80% are women. Why is that I wonder?

The phenomena also goes away at death from them.

It doesn't matter very much one way or the other whether the stigmata of Padre Pio were real. What matters is: What is your personal relationship with God's son and our savior and Lord, Jesus of Nazareth? Everything else is secondary . John 14:6. See also John, chapter 3.

My answer would be 1. Padre Pio's stigmata disappeared at death because there was no more need for it. God's revelation was finished.

Padre Pio is one of history's greatest frauds.
He was NEVER examined and in fact the catholic church KNEW full well he was pretending to be a stigmatic, but the money his dog-and-pony show brought in was too good. So they turned a blind eye.
Money, after all, is the primary objective of religion.

I am torn on this also
as i have studied some supposed stigmata and they do not always coincide with the wounds of Christ
especially the palm wounds
Christ would have been nailed through the wrists not the palm as the palm would have been too weak to hold
there is little dount in my mind that something is happening with such people
but like yourself i struggle with where that comes from
I do tend to lean towards the mind
