I love Broadway at the Beach....it was probably Gelato -- an Italian ice cream. YUM. Here is some info

I'm Italian and I know what you mean. Unfortunately I'm not from NYC and then I don't know the place where to buy it at Brooklin but I do know very well what you've to ask to get the same thing you ate at the beach.
In Italy the softer Ice cream is called "SEMIFREDDO" and we taste it either with fruit flavours (mango, strawberry, peach, apricot, ect.) or classics like chocolate, cream, hazelnut, ect.

Being Italian myself, I can tell you you had Granita. Gelato is of the creamy variety, whilst granita is the sherbert/sorbet equivalent.
