You're not getting engaged, you're going to a dance. One simple, but different, thing you could do to ask her would be to send her flowers & ask her on the gift card.
What you need to make special is the even itself. She's going to remember the prom, not how you asked (unless you do it in skywriting or something really bizarre.)
Be her Prince Charming on that night. Make sure you dance with her (some boyfriends don't) & make sure she has a good time. Plan something unusual or special for after the prom, or the next day - make the entire weekend memorable.

Make her go on a scavenger hunt with clues and you can be at the end waiting to ask her. Or you can take pictures of yourself asking her. Each word "Will you go to Prom with me?" can be a different picture. You can get creative with those and make them your own. You can include inside jokes you guys have and stuff. I mean, she is already your girlfriend and you know she's going to say yes, so just have a ton of fun with it!!!

One of the girls I work with, her daughter was asked by a guy that took her on a walk and stopped on the walk in front of an area where he had spelled out PROM? with rocks and gave her a rose.
She said her daughter was really excited

she's your girlfriend what is so hard about saying will you go to prom with me if my boyfriend didn't ask me to his prom I would probably be mad you don't have to do anything spectacular to ask her but on the night of prom you should take her to dinner first and buy her a pretty corsage

Just get her some nice flowers and a cute card telling her i love you "just because" and leave her a note to ask her if she will attend prom with you. leave it on her door step when she's out and it will be the biggest surprise when she gets home.

If she is already your girlfriend, try this...ask her to help you select the right tux and accessories for the evening, because you want to look your best when you take her. You obviously have a computer, so ask her to help you look online at some ideas.

I think that if you didn't ask her, she would think something was wrong. You are girlfriend and boyfriend.
You can plan other things that are special too at other times.

Why are you so uncertain if she's your girlfriend.
Do you go on dates? Just ask her as you are asking her on a date, a special date. Make sure your breath doesn't stink when you ask her, cause she's going to feel uneasy having to dance with a smelly breath.
