Well, first things first, a good physical cleaning. If I feel that my home really needs a good cleansing, I place a white candle in the room, give it a thorough top to bottom cleaning, then a good smudge with white sage, or sage an cedar mix. If there has been a terrible illness or some such, I might also smudge with Osha root. I do this room by room, and visualize the light from the candle as a white light penetrating to all corners of the room, and driving out any negative or stagnant energy. By the time I get from one end of the house to the other, it feels reeeeeaaallly quiet. If I feel the need of a further blessing of the house, then I might go round the entire place with a smudge of frankincense, for protection and consecration, and with a house blessing prayer...There are many other ways to go about it, that is just the way that I do it.
Try lookin at The Magical Household by Scott Cunningham for some other ideas...
Kallan: Nettles! What an idea, that one never occured to me, I'l bet that is protective! I have yellow loosestrife by my front door, that stuff sure does take over tho!

Personally, I physically clean the house from top to bottom with all the windows open. Then I usually take sage or pine smudge and walk through every room saying a blessing. The blessing can be as simple or as elaborate as you like. After I'm done with every room, I let the wind take the smoke outside clearing the negativity away as it goes. I hope this is helpful.

Contrary to what most pagans do, I do not throw salt water around.. salt eats away at paint, metal and other materials.
I use sage, cedar and sweetgrass for a smudge after doing a thorough physical cleaning. I may also burn a combo of frankincense and myrrh.
For added protection, some nettles at the entrances.
I hope this helps!

Lysol works good. Try Ajax on the real tough stains, though.
