Well, at the home depot store near me, they sell these black thick material curtains. I think they are called something like Theater Drapes or something on that line.

Or you can trade the blinds for dark shades, the ones where you just pull down and get darker curtains.

My fiancee also works midnights every two weeks and needs to sleep during the day, we have taupe blinds and it works quite well.

Find some cardboard the size of the window, a bikes shop,or an appliance store that sells refrigerators is a good place. Cut a piece to make a tight fit then spray contact adhesive and apply tin foil shiny side out. Try to keep it clean so the tin foil remains reflective. Slip it into the window opening and close the curtains that should do it. If you do not have curtains you need some stops to close the light on the edges.

Vinyl pull-down blinds are probably your best bet. They come in all different colours, including black. They are heavy and thick and keep the light out fairly well. Just make sure you buy a very thick one.

You could also sew a liner on the inside of your drapes. If you hate to sew, there are fusible iron on sheet glues that you can buy from any fabric store so that you can simply iron the new material onto the back of the old one.

Good luck!

Go to walmart and buy some shades, they are in the blind and window covering section. They go up just like blinds but are a solid sheet, the shades and curtain should keep the sun totally out.

If you go to a decent home store where they sell curtains, you can find some that are made to block out light. Basicaly they are just heavy drapes that are usually black or a different dark color. Try some place like the JC penny Home Store. They have lots of choices and are usually pretty reasonable.

They make curtains called "blackout" curtains. They don't have to actually be black, they are just lined on the side facing the window, and completely block out the sun.

I suffer from migraines and need total darkness from time to time. In the beginning, I too used tinfoil, Tacky! So I built shutters for the interior. I painted mine but you could cover them with padded fabric. When open they expose simple sheers on rods.

There are room darkening shades available. Check with your local window covering shop or Home Depot and Lowes.
