Why are so many people, believers and non-believers, so sacarstic and rude on here? I mean, it's not a matter of if you believe in the same thing or not, it's a matter of maturity and respect! What good does it do to be mean and hurtful. I see a lot of questions posted on here that are asked specifically to get people riled up? WHY?

Because we get a rise out of you, sunshine! Mission accomplished: Now go home and take it where the sun doesn't shine. And, please, don't stop judging. We enjoy it when you hypocrites indulge us!

I think you mean sarcasm.

It surprises me, too. We have been reporting abuse and reporting abuse until we get tired, but the hateful and just plain irritating people seem to gravitate toward the Religion & Spirituality section. I suppose it's because feelings are stronger here than anywhere except maybe politics.

Should we go check out the Politics section for some comedy relief?

As to why they do it, I chalk it up to immaturity. The older you get, the more you realize that you are not convincing anyone of the rightness of your point of view if you cannot be well-mannered.

In fact, I often wonder if the most extreme rudeness is not written by people who believe the opposite of what they say, in order to discredit the group they pretend to believe in. When someone who claims to be a Christian or a Muslim says really horrible things, might it not be that they are really on the other side, trying to prove that those people they hate are the ones who are rude and crude?

The use of sarcasm isn't a sign of immaturity, but it could be argued that the inability to write good satire - and/or work out just what is and what isn't a parody - is the sign of an underdeveloped mind.

Rudeness and sarcasm don't necessarily go together; sanctimony and false piety almost always do.

I like to think that in my own little way I am educating Bible literalists in the art of critical reading. I'm probably not having any effect whatsoever in this aim, so it's just as well that it's also fun.

I think some people get on here who are bored and haven't been taught any better. Getting people riled up gives them something to do. I get on here because I think, just maybe, I can help someone. I'm not the smartest person in the world, but I have life experience that has taught me a lot.

Some are genuinely upset. Others are just ranting and venting. After all, everyone is allowed to be in a crappy mood once in a while.

But a lot of these people are something called "energy vampires", meaning that they cannot (due to their mean-spiritedness) receive pure energy directly from the Nature. When people get angry, they emit negative energy and that is what these people feed on. Granted, its second-hand-energy, but still energy.

Ditto's to fireball's answer except that I am old enough to be most everyone's grandfather.

But I do get a little sarcastic sometimes because of generalizations about Christians and more so, the assumptions about Christians. Like all wars are caused by religion, etc. And I take great exception when people make rude, demeaning, and darn right, dirty, filthy remarks about our president. And the fact that he is a Christian.

List all the major changes, good or ill, that have occurred as a result of holding hands and singing Kum Bah Yah.

We'll wait.

Can't think of one, can you?

Now list all the major changes that have occurred, good or ill, as a result of debate, provocation and controversy.

We'll wait.

Okay, stop before you get writer's cramp.

If that doesn't answer your question I don't know what to tell you.

I think because some of these poor people actually get a thrill in making people upset ... it's sort of along the lines of the toddler that will cause trouble simply because negative attention is better than no attention at all.

Makes you feel sorry for the toddler lol

Sarcasm is a useful tool for fighting ideology with which you disagree.

Sarcasm almost destroyed the Kluless Klux Klan. It can bring down other groups doing dangerous things too.
