The word "Oinos" in the Bible translates to the word "Wine"...it was not grape juice. Some churches are forbidding it because they do NOT fully understand Jesus intention.Wine is also used at Christian Holy Days, such as the Last Supper. Jesus intended for us to use wisdom and descretion in drinking. He did not promote getting drunk, We are supposed to observe as He did, so since God judges the heart, it is known whether we have the sense to drink in moderation, or to abuse Wine, or any alcohol. Because of this, some churches forbid it; taking the intention of Jesus to allow us to celebrate Holy Days, and to appreciate that Wine represents His blood, and to enjoy an occasional drink, as a celebration in good taste.
Good question

It was wine what Jesus drank. In history books, especially books on Jewish history, we can learn about their ways and customs and what they drank in those days was wine, nowhere says it was grape juice. As we all know, by those times, there was no techonology developed to make wine without alcohol. The teaching about forbidding the drinking of alcohol is non-sense, the teaching should be "to avoid excess".

Churches are not forbidding wine drinking, they just want people to be careful with alcohol and consequences the abuse brings.
I read that in Jesus time the wine was not fermented the way as now.

Yes, Jesus made wine from water, and drank wine. Jewish priests called him a wine-bibber (drunk), because he ate and drank often with questionable sinner types. There are many instances in the Bible about people getting drunk, and other passages saying too much wine is a BAD thing.
It was also used for medicinal purposes. In Paul's letter to Timothy, He instructed Timothy to drink a little wine for his stomach's sake., (probably had an ulcer from worrying about the church).
There are many cultures on this planet. Many drink wine on a regular basis with their meal or maybe before bed. Many other people are raving drunks that are a drain on society.
Please remember that many people who have been converted to Christianity were converted at the worst point in their life. They were either an alcoholic, they were married to one, or they might have lost a loved one due to alcohol, and lets face it, there are WAY more people that abuse alcohol than the ones that do not.
Many churches do alcohol rehab counselling, deal with family problems regarding alcohol, along with all the other problems related to alcohol. They have to deal with it constanlty, so I guess they would be kind of biased towards alcohol after seeing all the damage it does first hand.
In the states, the alcohol problem was becoming so bad that there was a prohibition on it for a while. Phohibition in the states didnt just happen over night, it was 50 years in the making, and alcoholism was rampant during that time, so it can be understood that there is such a stigma in the states among the curches and in other countries regarding alcohol.
I spent a career in the U.S. military, and spent 9 years in Germany. I went to a German church (pentecostal), and after church, we went to the fellowship hall, where they broke out RACKS of beer! Me and my American friends almost fell out of our chairs. The german christians saw no problem with it as long as one didnt get slobbering drunk (which is hard NOT to do with german beer).
I for one have a bad problem with alcohol of any form. I do drink wine on occasion and almost always it is a glass after dinner, or I might have some whisky in my tea when I have a cold, (better than ni-quil, and at least I know what is in it). That is the extent of my drinking alcohol, and I would inderstand a church denying my membership if I didnt 'clean my act up'.
Wine in moderation is good for you. Too much wine will kill you or someone else. Just check out the statistics of alcohol related traffic deaths and shootings. The problem is not the car or the gun, but the drunk idiot operating it. Ban cars? Ban guns? NO! BAN ALCOHOL, and i would guarantee a drastic drop in traffic deaths, shootings, fights, bar brauls, domestic disputes, destruction of property, and hospitals full of people with alcohol related diseases.
Also, most importanlty, the Bible is a written history of the HUMAN CONDITION, and shows that some of the most important figures in the Bible did REALLY STUPID THINGS after being drunk. Noah was drunk and cursed his son. Abraham's nephew, Lot was the only survivor of the destruction of Sodom And Gomorrah, along with his two daughters. He had no sons. They were living in a cave and his daughters wanted to preserve the family name and got him drunk, then had sex with him. Talk about sick and twisted! There are many other instances in the Bible that record people being drunk and EVERY TIME something BAD happened. This is not condoning alcohol, it is showing that even the strongest, most influential and powerful person can be made an idiot if he abuses that fire water.

hi, i'm undecided if its Baptists. some Pentacostals i understand shun it. although for people who condemn it: a million) undesirable interpretations. Wine isn't prohibited in the Bible; merely overindulgence in it like wealthy ingredients besides. 2) some preacher in the nineteenth century pronounced the wine become rather ungerminated grape juice. BS: a) Veritas in vino est - previous Roman proverb which says there is reality in wine b) do no longer bask in too plenty wine lest you sense such as you're on the mast of a deliver in a stormy sea and awaken day after immediately feeling you were bitten by ability of a poison serpent - e book of Proverbs. c) If as quickly as saved continuously saved, then what the hell does it count in case you drink wine, sheep shag or sell drugs besides? you're certain of heaven. I ought to believe the super seventeenth century Catholic clergyman and statesman, Cardinal Richelieu: " If God did no longer desire guy to rejoice with wine then why did he make it so good? " Cheers, Michael Kelly

I don't know. My church doesn't forbid it at all. But some groups think it's a horrible sin. For instance, I know someone who was threatened with excommunication from their church for cooking with alcohol, which is just ridiculous. To me, the sin would probably lie more in being a chronic drunkard rather than drinking like a normal person, in moderation.

Because they base their beliefs on the works of men! In Jesus' time they litteraly had to add alcohol to the water in order to consume it. The water was so tainted with bacteria and the like that consuming it straight was very deadly.
