The quote may be a little more poetic and whimsical than necessary, but I do agree with it.
GB Shaw was pointing out that the love we feel for other people can be fleeting. We may fall in (and out of) love dozens of times in our lives, but food will always be there.

I agree with the other writers. However, that is a very mundane thing. Water is the same kind of need, but we do not 'love' water. Food comes in diff shapes and sizes, and is varied. Not so water.
Now, because of this fact, it is easy to enjoy the variety of foods, and still get nourished. Drinks (not adult beverages) all are flavored water, or are fruit/veggie juices. they nourish too
What about loving God? maybe GBS did not have a relationship with the Creator of the Universe. I do. I even (joy of joys) WORSHIP that God.
Would I choose God over food? I hope, if push came to shove (IE persecution and being asked to renounce my faith in God), I would choose God over food. I think He would give me strength so to do. I live in the free world, so I do not expect this kind of treatment.
GBS made a good point: We are creatures with base delights, and the only 'higher' plane is a spiritual one.

true. i mean food is about the only thing that you need for the rest of your life. you can grow in and out of various types of loves but not out of food. i think bernard shaw just pointed out one of the most obvious things out there

you know how when people confess their love it could go something like this "I love you, I need you, I can't live with out you!" Well, all the same can be said for food too only difference is you really do need and can't live without food.

It means that people would rather eat then have sex. It's the same theory as those who smoke cigarettes after they eat or when they drink coffee, addiction.
