do people believe in god for a false sense of assurance or security when there's nothing to hold on to?

Disappointed with how their life turned out, or they prayed for something (like a Hershey bar) and did not get it.

Despair, sadness.

Well...you have two different questions. I think some people don't believe in God, because they worship their own intellect. They cannot accept that there is anything beyond the understanding of the mind.

Secondly, some people may hold on to a belief in God for security. Kind of an after-thought when something goes wrong...now lets pray. Or when things do go wrong...they wonder why God allows this to happen.

Then you have those who are truly in a relationship with God. They know him as real, because they are intimately involved with him as he is with them. He is part of their every day life and these people realize just how small and insignificant each of us is...yet how important and loved we are by God.

Good question.

Some folks feel they can't believe in anything they can't see.

Some feel that belief in a super being is only for those who have a loss and need some kind of crutch to lean on.

I believe in God because throught my life there have been mysterious events nobody can explain, and for some reason, I happen to have been saved so I must be doing something right, and I must have God watching over me.

And I also have learned that even though mankind can visually see something, what they see may be illusion. (i.e. the events of 911 which haven't been fully explained yet offered glaring visibility)

Some people don't believe cause of pride or have never been approached by the subject or their family upbringing. Some people get mad at God. Some people come to God when they are brought low and have no one or no where else to go. Like people in prison.

There are four cagetories of people who approach God -
1. Distressed
2. Seeker of knowledge
3. Seeker of wealth
4. Wise (who approach God not bcoz of any of the above 3 reasons. They understand who God is and their relationship with Him)

And, the ones who never try to understand God. They are proud of their knowledge. And, that knowledge is - "There is no God. I am God." They take the process of atheism.

Because some people believe that seeing is believing and since they can't see God, then they choose not to believe. Some people don't believe because they don't think that God has to make decisions for them and that they can make decisions on their own. I believe in God.

God according to human perspective is very basic…but if we think of it…reverse the question to…. why did we come to be? And ultimately there should be a reason for everything…god is not an entity of existence he is surely beyond existence.. " IF YOU CANT UNDERSTAND THIS, YOU Surely CANT BELIEVE IN GOD"

People can believe in God and choose just not to follow him.

Well I don't believe in any god because I see not only no evidence of them, but no need for them.

I think historically they were necessary as an explanation of things people couldn't comprehend, but the necessity - for many - has passed.

Some people don't believe in God because it leads to responsibility and they prefer to run from responsibility.
