All the major religions have different impacts on humanity and breed different cultural norms. For example, the deep meditation norms of the budhhists are not shared by jews, nor do buddists insist on kosher lifestyles.

Suicide bombings or Jihad like phenomena are virtually the exclusive domain of islamic culture.

It matters not whether some english speaking muslims really believe the supposed "personal struggle" version of Jihad because we are only dealing with objective facts in this question.

In others words, what is Islam in reality as opposed the imagined version. How terrifying is it, for humanity itself, that a relgion can do this at all, and on such a scale?

Is Islam itself to blame or is it just a gun in the hand of some bad people? Either choice works so long as we agree that Islam is a gun, as opposed to a pillow (like buddism might be).

Here is my "conclusion" of Islam:

For some reason, people in the USA are
so stupid that they are actually falling for this "Go Islamic" crap. Peace-niks who are against the war in Iraq are going the route
of extreme by becomming interested in Islam, believing that it is really a peaceful, nice, loving religion, and then actually going for it. How can people be so stupid? Its
obvious what is going on. They haven't been able to get us after 9/11 (uh, Thank you President Bush) so they are attempting
to divide us eternally by pushing that Islam garbage to people who are too stupid to see what their agenda is. Divide and conquer; they are attacking us from within, and using our own stupid people to do it.
People better wake the hell up in this generation. We cannot keep ourselves and our children safe by talking nice to terrorists, and serving tea and sandwiches is not gonna "make it all better". They want to kill us, and by people changing to Islam in America, they are all but opening the door for them to waltz in and do just that.
How can people be so damned stupid??

WAKE THE HELL UP AMERICA.

True. I am personally very tired of those that just keep repeating the same tired phrase over and over again: "No, this is not Islam, Islam is peaceful, don't judge us by the deeds of a few of us."
Ok, so what is wrong with that statement? Well, plenty. My first response to that is, "then what is REAL Islam? and who decides that?"
I am very familiar with Islam and its teachings, so i know very well what the Quran does and does not say. The problem is not in the Quran itself, though it is a little violent in some places, but not anymore so than the bible, so where is the problem?
The problem is in the limited mentalities that continue to attempt to understand the Quran with a 10th century mindset. That is still the most widespread interpretation of religion. No matter what Moslems say now, this is what they continue to look back on. In the midst of a depressed and hopeless present, they continue to look back upon a romanticized vision of a mythical past, in which the Islamic "empire" was somehow the embodiment of justice and happiness, though it was far, far from that.
You say that Islam itself is the gun, i will disagree. If it is the gun, then someone needs to put a bullet in that gun and it is the medieval mentalitity that prevades the Muslim world that allows this gun to be continuously reloaded and fired.
So again i ask, what is the REAL Islam? Who decides how to interprete the Quran? Let us put aside all the unsubstantiated and uncorraborated sayings of the prophet and just take the Quran. How do you read it? What can you take literaly and what can you play around with?
Is real Islam what was done during and right after the time of the prophet? Well, that was almost nothing but continous warfare. True, more or less until the prophet's death, the wars were defensive in nature, but what about the rest of Islamic history? Is that Islam? Continuous warfare and conquest? If not, then we need to take an absolutely new look at the religion and redefine it within the context of the different world we live in.
I don't agree that suicide bombings are the exclusive domain of Islam, they happen within all faiths. The crusades (yes, i had to bring them up) were another form of Jihad, albeit with some justification.
Islam is what its followers make of it, not some text that says this or that. It is what it is in reality, not some imagined, idealistic vision of what is should be.

True. I am in my opinion very worn out of those who simply hold repeating the equal worn out word time and again: "No, this isn't Islam, Islam is peaceable, do not pass judgement on us through the deeds of a couple of people." Ok, so what's incorrect with that announcement? Well, lots. My first reaction to that's, "then what's REAL Islam? and who makes a decision that?" I am very conversant in Islam and its teachings, so i do know very good what the Quran does and does now not say. The concern isn't within the Quran itself, even though this is a little violent in a few locations, however now not anymore so than the bible, so in which is the concern? The concern is within the constrained mentalities that hold to try to have an understanding of the Quran with a tenth century attitude. That continues to be essentially the most fashionable interpretation of faith. No topic what Moslems say now, that is what they hold to seem again on. In the midst of a depressed and hopeless gift, they hold to seem again upon a romanticized imaginative and prescient of a legendary beyond, where the Islamic "empire" used to be by some means the embodiment of justice and happiness, even though it used to be a ways, a ways from that. You say that Islam itself is the gun, i will be able to disagree. If it's the gun, then any individual demands to place a bullet in that gun and it's the medieval mentalitity that prevades the Muslim global that enables this gun to be consistently reloaded and fired. So once more i ask, what's the REAL Islam? Who makes a decision how you can interprete the Quran? Let us placed apart all of the unsubstantiated and uncorraborated sayings of the prophet and simply take the Quran. How do you learn it? What are you able to take literaly and what are you able to mess around with? Is truly Islam what used to be performed for the duration of and proper after the time of the prophet? Well, that used to be nearly not anything however continous struggle. True, roughly till the prophet's demise, the wars had been protecting in nature, however what approximately the leisure of Islamic historical past? Is that Islam? Continuous struggle and conquest? If now not, then we have got to take an definitely new seem on the faith and redefine it inside the context of the distinct global we are living in. I do not agree that suicide bombings are the unique area of Islam, they occur inside all faiths. The crusades (sure, i needed to carry them up) had been an additional kind of Jihad, albeit with a few justification. Islam is what its fans make of it, now not a few textual content that claims this or that. It is what it's actually, now not a few imagined, idealistic imaginative and prescient of what's will have to be.

They are deceived about thinking that they can get into Heaven by blowing themselves and others up. They think that although their religion says they can only have 4 wives on earth that they can have 72 in heaven. If the suicide bombers' leaders and teachers believe this so much, why don't they blow themselves up to gain such rewards? I don't get their religion. They blow up Jews and others who disagree with their religion yet they claim they believe in Abraham and Jesus. They claim the Bible has been corrupted yet the Koran itself says the Bible in those days was right. There are copies of Bibles from that time period so if anyone takes the time to do a little research they can easily find out that they are the same as today's. It is written, "If you were Abraham's children,"said Jesus," then you would do the things Abraham did. As it is, you are determined to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things." (read more from John 8:40-47)

Guess you never heard of the IRA then.
Islam does not tell anyone to go out and bomb anything.
Whats Bush's excuse for all the bombing he does? Or ETA? You have had home grown bombers have you not? Oklahoma ring any bells.
Jihad no matter what your "objective fact" may be in this question does mean personal struggle, mental struggle, physical struggle and struggle in war also and that is a FACT!
And what scale would that be exactly?
So America is occupying Iraq and the citizens have no right to defend themselves? I think they do.
Tell me this if the opposite where true and Iraqi soldiers where walking the streets of your country and imposing there views on you, you would sit back? You would do nothing?
Islam is most definitely not a gun. You are welcome to your opinion but that does not mean it is a valid or true one.
You obviously are very selective about the faith and that's your prerogative but dont tell me what Islam is or is not when i live it and you dont.

Islam is all but irrelevant to the suicide bombings and jihad that you allude to. In almost all cases, the crucial factor is not religion but global geopolitics. And global geopolitics mixed with any ideology becomes highly dangerous. That said, I don't think Muslim fundamentalism is a bigger danger or a more serious threat to the world than - say - BJP-Hinduism, Israeli Zionism, or American manifest destiny.

Religious fundamentalism itself is the gun, admittedly with a few exceptions.

Cults and splinter cells from a number of religions have committed atrocities in the name of their beliefs for hundreds, if not thousands of years.

The fact that the perpetrators of suicide bombings have no intention of surviving the act may be unique in this day and age, but they certainly weren't the originators of the concept of voluntary martyrdom.

There's a difference between any religion and the behaviour of people.

In other words; The Israeli soldier who killed the palastenine baby Muhammad Al Dorra is not a representative to Jews or the people of Israel who have very good people and very bad ones as anything in the world...

Bush and his demons of Guantenamo detention camp are not representatives to christianity showing "How terrifying is it"...

Same here applies to the Chinese Buddihst emporer who used to throw his oponents to crocodiles...

You make several generalizations in this that are pointedly wrong.

Yes, you don't find buddhist suicide bombers, but you do, have, and will find public suicides in protest of injustices. There have been plenty of buddhist murderers, and even mass murderers (look back at the history in south east asia, and you find some of the worst atrocities committed by certain "buddhists.")

There are plenty of christian extremists who go after abortion doctors (including killing them), who believe that any non white person is sub human, who advocate violence against anyone who disagrees with them, and advocate a holy war vs anyone who disagrees with them.

What you have are suicide bombers who are raised in extremely reactionary upbringings where the idea of a mullah is not challenged.

The biggest problem islam has is they do not have a unified leader, who can cause all of islam to react. so while you have homicide bombers in one country, other more stable level headed muslims cannot control these few insane individuals.
