Since December 2001, numerous Islamic charities in the U.S. have been raided or shut down by federal investigators, including the Dallas-based Holy Land Foundation; two suburban Chicago-area charities, Global Relief Foundation and Benevolence International; and the Sudan-based Islamic American Relief Agency, which has a chapter in Missouri.

None of the raids has led to terrorism-related criminal convictions.

I'm sure their are Muslim based charities that do help people. The problem is that many are simply fronts used to facilitate terrorism. Often these "charities" are able to hide their dubious dealings, leaving no paper trail, or evidence of their terrorist activities. These are the "charities" that get most of the "press", as the ones that are legitimate are not deemed newsworthy. They (the "charities") are simply doing what their supposed to do. As for the "terrorist charity cells", I believe their is probably tangible evidence of illicit activity, and that is why they are being raided and investigated. If it turns out they were wrong, their attitude is, "better safe than sorry" (a policy I believe most Americans support because of 9/11). Also, they (the Gov.) often does find evidence of wrong doing, they just can't get a conviction because the criminal party(ies) have fled the county or done a good job "covering their own as.ses". So conviction rates do not always correctly reflect the number of crimes being committed. In short, I think most people realize there are many legitimate Muslim charities, it's just that those aren't the ones people usually see on the "six o'clock news". However, as I've already stated, you should not be using "conviction rates" as a gauge to help measure the number of active" terrorist cells" in the US, and the World.

This question shows the reality that we should be careful when we read and accept just one news article. The Holy Land Foundation, as an example mentioned, apparently raised about $60 million, claiming it was to care for needy Palestinians. After investigation, it was indicted, although convictions have not been made yet, as far as I have found out. They were indicted for being used at least partly, to support Hamas, a group that calls for the total destruction of the State of Israel, to support schools that indoctrinated children into being suicide bombers and to support suicide bombers' families. In 2003, the Isalmic charity director of Benevolence International (also mentioned in the article above) pleaded guilty to and was convicted of racketeering. This group and two other closely related groups were designated as financiers of terrorism. Muslims don't help others as far as my understanding of their religion goes, in that they would be helping"infidels". They are encouraged to help their own poor and needy, which is why they do not support groups like The Red Cross, etc.

I never thought Muslims don't help others. In fact, like Jews, they (quite rightly) concentrate on helping those of their own faith who need help. Most other religions do, too, although some Christians use charity as a part of proselytizing.

But I also feel that it is up to the Muslim community to investigate these charities and assure themselves of their honesty and integrity, as well as their distance from any terrorist action. Just because no convictions have been made does not mean that these charities were not indirectly helping terrorists. It only means the rules of evidence precluded them from being prosecuted. That's why we say "not guilty" in a court of law, not "innocent."

What is wrong with regular American charities like the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Purple Heart???

What is wrong with the local orphanage? The charity hospital?

Let them give to the country that they are living in and taking from. I do it. What's wrong with the Muslims doing it?

You are either an American or you are a visitor. We are at war and visitors need to go home.

What a crock political ploy. There are hundreds and thousands of charities that Muslims can donate to that have very honorable causes, but they choose not to. I've never heard the Red Cross (or Red Crescent) being condemned.

The reason those charities were shut down is because they WERE giving money to terrorist organization. Money can be tracked, it's not that difficult.

Because they are still on trial for the most part, and the Charities shut down in Florida and New York, have had convictions. Sorry, but they can go back to Islamabad for all I care.

I don't think Muslims aren't helping other people. I suspect the percentage of Muslims who help other people is about equal to the percentage of people in any other religion who help other people. I think that most Muslims are good people who are just living out their lives as peacefully as they can under the circumstances given to them, just like most other people in the world. I think the confusion on Muslims being perhaps seen as less helpful is that so much death and destruction has been caused by people who connected their acts with their Muslim beliefs. So the bad acts of the few outweigh the good acts of the many in a lot of people's eyes.

I wonder how many Christian anti-abortion "charities" were raided to investigate their support for terrorism after the various antiabortion terrorist attacks.

I'm guessing none at all.
