Athiests before the time of Christopher Columbus mocked the bible because it said the earth was round.
Obviously they could not fight the bible on its morality because that was proof in life against those that chose immorality. for example not for the Bible's stand for marriage honor, salvation John 3 repent and be born again John 3-Jesus words, hope/joyfull anticipation of heaven and the more abundant life on earth but because the bible said the earth was round and even an 'idiot' knew it had to be flat!

the bible does say the earth is round=Is the Bible inspired by God?
"There is One who is dwelling above the circle of the earth, the dwellers in which are as grasshoppers, the One who is stretching out the heavens just as a fine gauze, who spreads them out like a tent in which to dwell." - Isaiah 40:22

"He is stretching out the north over the empty place,
Hanging the earth upon nothing." - Job 26:7

"
Another reason why you can put your trust in the Bible is that when it comes to scientific matters, what this ancient book states is accurate. For example, at a time when most people believed that the earth was flat, the Bible spoke of “the circle [or, sphere] of the earth.” (Isaiah 40:22) And over 3,000 years before the famous scientist Sir Isaac Newton explained that the planets are held in empty space by gravity, the Bible poetically stated that ‘the earth is hanging upon nothing.’ (Job 26:7)
proof against a flat earth as athiests once claimed= Is the Bible inspired by God?

The Bible is inspired by God and as you have noted when people said it was wrong and it was allegory - it ended up being full truth. The so-called contradictions seem to always become truth once time gets an opportunity to pass.

In the 1800's for instance, if someone read in the Bible that Israel would return home on the wings of an eagle, people would think this was allegory. They would have said an eagle can't hold up the body of a person. But "wings of an eagle" is a very good description of an airplane.

Just to point out that the Aristotelian League was the group most assured and convinced that the Sun rotated around the Earth and that the Earth was flat, along with the Vatican Who trusted in their science. Hebrew scholars have taught it was round for centuries. When Joshua asked the sun to stand still, I won't hold that against him, he was no scholar, he was a general. It would have appeared to have stood still if God slowed the rotation of Earth. People still today armed with all our scientific knowledge, still talk about the Sun rising and setting, which it really doesn't, it just appears that way. If I walk out in the morning to watch the Sun rise, does that mean I think the Sun revolves around the earth? Being ridiculous and picky, does not prove a point

The King James Bible has great importance historically. For a long time, especially during the colonial and early years of America, it was the only book many people knew. Just because it cannot be taken literally due to internal inconsistency does not mean it should be thrown out. If nothing else, it is useful to know where all those familiar quotes came from. "To everything there is a season," for example.

But I must admit I do not remember a Bible passage saying that the earth is round. Where did you find that?

Hello!
Planet Heaven is Godzillion miles away, straight up North.

Now, at one point in the past, there were just Two Planets.

Planet Heaven
Planet Earth

They were Faaar Away from each other.

Effectively, GOD hung Planet Earth on "NOTHING".

Later, HE added the rest of the stuff. I know what your Thinking, where was the sun, you know sunlight? To light the Earth? So we could see?
Didn't need any sun. GOD lit the Earth up (GOD is Light) Just like HE lights up Heaven, where there Ain't no Shadows!
Till Darkness came upon the Earth.
Then, GOD had to turn HIS Light off, and Create the other stuff (sun, stars, etc.).
We would need that stuff to see in the Dark.

Ditto.....:-)

actually, the bible says the world is round but not a sphere.. a course in hebrew would help you with that. It also says the sky is held up by four pillars.. do you believe that to be true?

Do you also believe that the sun was held back for a day, even though that has been proven to be impossible, considering the earth revolves around the sun?

Do you understand that bats are not birds as the bible says?

The "flat-earth" theory was mainly held by a small group of greek philosophers and was never a widely held belief.

Trying to prove the bible is scientific is not going to get you anywhere, especially when you use something that simply isn't true for an argument.

Sure, if you want to throw it away, go ahead. It's your Bible. I really don't know what that has to do with the earth being flat, but whatever.
Who couldn't fight the bible on its morality? There are many non Christians who are much more moral than some Christians, so believing in the Bible has nothing to do with being moral or not.
Your rant does not make much sense.

"Athiests before the time of Christopher Columbus mocked the bible because it said the earth was round. "

Bull. You just made that up.

Doesn't the fact that you Christians have to lie so much to defend your beliefs tell you something about the quality of those beliefs? It should.
======================
As for your claim that the Bible is an accurate scientific text, let's take a look at your own understanding of the facts. You seem to think that before Christopher Columbus, everyone (except Bible-believers) thought that the world was flat. Read this, and learn:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_Earth

Pretty much torpedoes your whole premise, hey?

So let's take a look at what happened here: you posted an arrogant accusation based on your own demonstrably false belief, and to make it "stick" the way you wanted it to, smeared on a deliberate lie about atheists.

Care to withdraw your "question"?

Just because your religion isnt Christian based (or Biblical) doesnt mean you are an athiest. An athiest doesnt believe in God....most religions believe in God. Your specifically talking about those who dont belive in the Christian religion, but that doesnt make them athiests.

Some people will try, "by hook or by crock", to win an
argument by throwing out all sorts of nonsense.

Forgive me because he can't see anything in his eyes
except his Bible.

Histroy can tell us that many get killed because they talked
things contrary to the Church, and our friend us simply
turn the facts around.

Smart way to win an argument! Keep on. One day you
will get 2 black eyes because of this.

You totally made up the Columbus bit. No wonder, it is how your faith is built. Make up stuff, believe in it, then persecute others who believe different.

Look, if it was just the flat earth thing, fine. But it isn't.
