I'm walking down a crowded city street. Walking toward me was a young 20ish man. He looked me in the eye as we walked toward each other and said "Yummy" and then kept walking. How should I have reacted?

Go up to him with an evil smirk on your face and say, "Want me to whip you up a lamb's-blood smoothie?" He'll run away, trust me. I've said that before to other dudes, and they think I'm some uber creepy horror girl. Which I am, by the way.

If he thought that you were that attractive her would've at least had a conversation with you.
He was being a perve and you totally should've slapped him.
Please don't take this as i'm saying you're not attractive, but this guy just said it to get you thinking.

He's paying you a 'stranger's compliment'. Your appearance was obviously very attractive to him and as her walked on past you presumably did not want to embarrass you or cause conflict by striking up an unwanted conversation. Possibly he's already in a stable relationship with someone and this accounts for his actions in not taking it further. Your reaction should simply be to smile at him and, like him, carry on walking. I assume that you are an attractive girl and probably get lots of compliments. many men see girls such as you appreciatively without making any comment. Obviously in this case he wanted you to know that you had cheered him up and impressed him.

The young man was telling you that he saw you as being beautiful and sexy. Women are always saying that they like to be looked at by men, so accept it as a compliment, after all he did not reach out and touch yr butt.

well if you are old enough to be his mother smile and say thank-you i'm 39 and i look good at that age and do like it still when i get comments here one for you i was out one night with the man i live with and this boy about 22 asked to take me home i toldhim i was amost old enough to be his mother and he told m when he was done with me i would be calling him daddy i laughed and told him to see me when he was done growing up my man did not like it but it did mke me feel good
