And could only have one of two NT books (letters) with you - Romans and Philemon - which would you choose, and why ?

Thanks in advance for all considered, intelligent answers. May the Lord bring all of His people to maturity in the faith (that includes me!). Blessings.

This would be like choosing between your own children; but, if I had to make a choice, I would choose Romans...

Philemon is almost like a personal letter and contains little history, edification and instruction for the Church. Also the size of Philemon is much less and provides less material to read. Although it would be comforting, knowing that Paul was a prisoner (somewhat similar to being stranded) when he wrote it.

Romans provides a great deal of instruction, history, edification and giving glory to God. It also offers much more incite into how the church SHOULD be. Not to mention the volume of words is much greater than Philemon and would provide more reading opportunity.

I would choose Romans since it's one of my favorite NT books. Romans really covers a lot of ground for the Christian faith. Philemon is more about making a godly appeal.

HMMM, everyone else is choosing Romans and I certainly think Romans is one of my faves.
But to give Philemon consideration...
It is the one in which the owner of Onesimus is exhorted to take his servant back with out prejudice and to treat him with all equality in love. That in fact Onesimus is sent back as better than a servant but a brother in Christ.

Isn't this a lesson in radical forgiveness and true partnership in the work of building the Kingdom of God?

There certainly seems to be a great deal of quality there to consider also.
A thin letter, a lifetime of learning.

If I had to have only one or the other? Romans. I've always like the Roman Road, and I could read it every now and then to keep reminding me of God's love.

I would probably choose Romans, because there is more to chew on, plus I love to focus on the Gospel, it always thrills my heart. The victory over sin by Christ's power, and of course Romans have the principles of Christian living, which I always need to be reminded of.

Romans, in Romans it says ts a sin to doubt ,the opposite of doubt is faith.doubt cuts one off from the guidance of the holy spirit.so having something to remind me to have faith which Romans teaches would be best

I think I would pick Romans. One reason is that it is longer. Another reason is that it has more in it about how a christian should act. It is more inspirational. If I had my way about it I would take the whole bible including the OT.
