I have seen people spend sixty or eighty dollars on a meal and leave the server only 5$ or less and talk about how great the service and the food was. Should restaurants have to post a sign?? if you have money to go out and eat I believe people should be able to tip appropiately. If the servece sucks then tip accordingly of course, but i rarely have ever had service so terrible that i did not tip 15%.

Maybe it is not just servers, but they are paid, most of the time less than three dollars an hour because the GOVERNMENT believes the tips they make will make up the difference. If they made decent hourly money then it would not be an issue. I tip my hairdresser also. Most places have the servers claim that they made at least 10% of the total amount they sold. They must also share thier tips with bartenders and hostesses. I would tip the garbage man if he came in, got the trash, picked up after me, got me a cup of coffee and made three bucks on hour!!

BC they are cheap dirtballs

OK I HAD TO EDIT:

SERVERS MAKE 2.13 AN HOUR. THEY DEPEND ON TIPS TO SURVIVE, THEY ARE PROVIDING YOU A SERVICE, TO NOT TIP IS UNFAIR,RUDE,AND CRUEL. TO COMPARE IT TO TIPPING A GARBAGE MAN OR OTHER SERVICE PERSON IS UNFAIR AS THEY MAKE A DECENT WAGE. SERVERS DO NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hear you... some people are cheap. As a student (and a server), I don't go out to eat unless I have money for the meal AND tip- because they go hand in hand at nice places. If I get a bad tip when working and then the people come back again I make sure I don't wait on them.... then they get a reputation and the smart servers avoid them. Sometimes people just think "Hmmmmm $-- amount is a lot of money even if it is 15%.... I could buy MYSELF a such and such and the server probably won't be waiting on me again and I can sign this and walk out in 20 seconds...etc..." The list goes on but essentially people are selfish.

I tip depending on the quality of service. I am a regular at a specific pub in my town and the bartenders know me. They know my drink of choice and serve me with a smile. I always give them a decent tip at least 15% or more. When i go to my hair salon I always give a decent tip too.

Places i refuse to tip are fast food places. YEAH i have seen tip jars at fast food places. As if I'm gonna tip someone for pouring me a coffee and putting a donut or a muffin in a bag. PUH-LEEZE.
I remember once being at a fast food place and paying by debit - it included an amount for a tip and i skipped by that as i refuse to tip at a fast food place (as i indicated)

I was out with a friend once and we went to a new pub, we sat down and the waiter took our orders right away and we were served very very quickly and we were impressed. Our impression of this place went into the toilet when two minutes into us beginning to enjoy our meal the waiter was going off shift and needed to settle up. That put a real damper into his tip. I recall we got the bill and just made that dude wait to be paid. We were trying to ake a point - he was in a hurry because he kept coming by to see if we had put the money in that folder thing. Needless to say we have never been back to this place and it was at least three or four years ago.

Because they are rude & cheap. I'd also guess they never had to depend on tips or the generosity of others to make a living.

Maybe restraunts should rise the prices 15% and stop tips.

I was in an Applebee's when former pro football player sitting at the table next to me left a $5 tip on a $80 meal.

I'm assuming that you live in the US. The money you guys earn to do your job is crap. No-one should have to rely on the kindness of strangers to live.
In Australia some waiters earn more than Nurses. If you were to give a waiter/waitress a five dollar tip over here they would be happy.

People should be glad they got a tip at all, instead of griping about the percentage they "should" tip.

If I heard a person whine about the size of tip I put down, I would take it back and give them a 0% tip.

Those who complain should find another job where you are not depending on tips. You've applied for that job KNOWING that you are getting paid crappy and HOPING that every customer tips you 20%.

People are cheap! I am too! Yet, instead of spending 60 on a meal, I'll spend only $10 and leave my 15% tip when I go. Anyone who doesn't leave a fair tip should work as a waiter/waitress for the day and see that they really deserve it.

Fifteen percent of a bill that high is pretty steep, considering that it's what most people pay for their entire meal! Call me cheap, but if I ever spend $80.00 for a meal of any kind, I wouldn't expect a big fuss to be made about not paying the waiter the full 15%.

Good service is to expected as it's the job of the server to provide it. Some people feel they shouldn't have to pay extra for such services. For example, we don't pay teachers 15% above and beyond their salaries, nor doctors, accountants, nurses . . . well, you get the idea.

As for your last sentence, you're lucky! I've eaten in a few places where they should have paid us to eat there! They got no tip from our group.

Perhaps you shouldn't be made that the costumers aren't tipping you, and you should be mad at the boss for not paying you anything. God knows hes making a killing off of something that costs him 5 bucks to by and sells it for $80.
