1D Mark III approx. 8K USD
Nikon Professional would be.
D2H 4.3KUSD
D2Hs 5KUSD

Lets begin by dispelling a myth which will hopefully save you some money. A professional camera doesn't make a good photographer. That said the Canon Rebel is an excellent camera for a begining photographer or serious amature however it isn't a professional camera. This is not to say that you cannot make some stunning images with this camera. The camera does in fact have a lot of features which are standard on professional cameras which gives the photographer a lot of control over the image making process. The downside is that it isn't a very rugged camera.

I have been a pro photographer for 8 years and i personally choose canon. right now Fuji and Canon Have the best processors in them for "hand held/ 35mm like format" But for a commercial photographer might choose a phase one back for there camera so that they can have larger files. But a great way for you to read up on digital camera is to reed reviews to decide what is best for your needs.

A good photographer can use a less expensive camera as long as the resolution is where he wants it, and the lenses are distortion free. The weight and ease of using the box side of it counts a lot, as does its ability to accept accessories.

a year ago, for my nikon d70 with a lense, sb600, bag, extra compact flash cards, and tax, i paid $1600. i've shot weddings, portraits, album covers, etc. i'm not sure what "pro" cameras cost 3K but there's no reason you have to spend that much money to get good photos.
nikon's and canons will both produce good images. the most important thing is who's taking them.

I don't know the Cannon, but my Sony student photo-class camera was $700.
