Because your body needs rest to recoup.

You do not have to sleep at night. That is just a social thing. It is convenient to sleep when it is dark. In olden days, before oil lamps and electricity, sleeping at night was all you cold do, as without sufficient light, you really can't do much that is productive. So, now that we have the amenities of round the clock lighting, you sleep now at a time of your choice. Now as to why you even sleep in the first place, it is a way for your mind and body to recover from the activites you engage in, a time when the brain reorganizes your memory from short term to long term and things like that. You can try and avoid this sleep time and for a while, you will be able to stay awake, for up to several days, but then, there will come a time when you will be exhausted enough that you simply will not be able to function and you will sleep whether you want to or not. Someone referenced circadian rhythms. Your body has a regular activity cycle. Most people who allow themselves to free-run, going to bed when tired, waking without an alarm clock, i.e., not living by the clock, you will eventually fall into a near 24 hour cycle. I saw this on the Discovery Channel, where a group of people were in a windowless room, without a timepiece or any outside influence. They prepared their own meals, were awake and slept all without any reference to time. Most of the people were in a constant cycle by the 7th day, some a little longer, some a little shorter than 24 hours. You can change the length of this cycle. It happened to me every time I deployed in a submarine. The watch rotation is set to 18 hours, and after 4-7 days, you get used to the 18 hour day, so that after 90 days when you get back in port, the opposite happens, as now you are on a shorter day and it takes a while to get used to 24 hours again. It makes for odd sleep patterns for a few days.

Every creature needs to rest. Giraffes, little babies, elephants, dogs, cats, kids, koala bears, grandparents, moms, dads, and hippos in the jungle - they all sleep! Just like eating, sleep is necessary for survival.

Sleep gives your body a rest and allows it to prepare for the next day. It's like giving your body a mini-vacation. Sleep also gives your brain a chance to sort things out. Scientists aren't exactly sure what kinds of organizing your brain does while you sleep, but they think that sleep may be the time when the brain sorts and stores information, replaces chemicals, and solves problems.

The amount of sleep a person needs depends a lot on his or her age. Babies sleep a lot - about 14 to 15 hours a day! But many older people only need about 7 or 8 hours of sleep each night. Most kids between the ages of 5 and 12 years old are somewhere in between, needing 10 to 11 hours of sleep. Some kids might need more and some need less. It depends on the kid.

Skipping one night's sleep makes a person cranky and clumsy. After missing two nights of sleep, a person will have problems thinking and doing things; his or her brain and body can't do their normal tasks nearly as well. After five nights without sleep, a person will hallucinate (this means seeing things that aren't actually there). Eventually, it becomes impossible for the brain to give its directions to the rest of the body without sleep - the brain needs to spend time in bed and catch its ZZZs!

Your body has an internal clock. It wakes in the morning and sleeps at night. Of course it's easy to fight this urge and stay up till morning and go to sleep then. It doesn't really "matter" but in times when people didn't have light and needed to work for there food and possessions the sun provided the only light. So, people hard to work during the day, and sleep at night. It's really simple when you think about it.

You don't have to sleep at night unless you have things you have to do during the day. Your body needs sleep to perform optimally. Night time is better because it's quiet & dark so you get a more restorative sleep. Your mind can more easily shut down w/o distractions.

But some people can't sleep at night either due to daytime obligations, fear of the dark, a different internal body clock, etc. It really doesn't matter when you sleep as long as you get at minimum 6 hours of sleep in 24. Even pcs need occassional breaks no matter how many times you clear your cache or it begins to break down. Even God rested. How much more so us imperfect humans.

Actually, you don’t have to, you can sleep during the day time, but your body wont get the same rest as night time. FYI, sleeping 1 hour at night equals sleeping 3 hours at day.

Do you want to sleep during the day? Because sleeping at night is pretty much a social norm that's been reinforced through years and years and years of daytime productivity. So if you wanted to sleep during the day and try and do all your stuff at night, you could try but it would be extremely difficult.

All humans need to sleep, to keep their cells replenishing, and most people's body clock, or cirdadian rythm means they get tired by 10 pm and go sleep for 8 or so hours. If you dont work thru the day, and want to sleep then, it's quite OK for you to do so, just so you get some sleep.

You sleep at night because you need energy to work for the next day. Also sleeping helps you grow. If you didn't sleep the previous night, you'd be tired, cranky and you'd fall flat on the floor walking to work and fall asleep in your coffee at work!
